I'm thinking of building a server PC as a dedicated server host/backup/webhost PC but I don't have much experience with my budget is about 300$ I'm wondering about hardware like how much RAM would be preferable?, how bad can the graphic card be? and fans? etc.
It's not a serious project so don't come with all that why do you need a server? stuff
you could get a motherboard with intergrated graphics
You should go AMD, with intergrated graphics and 2gb ram.
$300 for a server? Jesus, you won't be getting more than an Atom and a decent ammount of storage with that.
Give me a moment, I'll work something out.
No you should get a Athlon X2.

Athlon II X2 @2.8GHz w/ Cooler Master CPU cooler
1GB Crucial DDR3-1066 RAM
CORSAIR 400W Power supply
Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200RPM Hard drive
XCLIO Godspeed ATX-Mid tower case
Samsung DVD burner/reader
Total price: $292
If you've got a spare DVD reader, you can swap it out for an extra gig of ram.

I already worked something out, now criticise me for the low ammount of ram, and the overpriced case.

This joke is older than excistance itself.
Get an old-ass rig, put in lots of DDR RAM and be done with it! Well, that is, if you want a "ghetto" homeserver, they're dirt cheap :P
Unless you have a good connection I don't you can really webhost some sites.
Webhosting doesnt need a great connection, i used to run one of 6-8 dl and 0.8 upload

Another build.
Cheaper case, cheaper power supply, stock CPU cooling, but it's got a quad instead of a dual.
It's also got 500GB of storage instead of just 320GB.
Still just 1GB of ram, but if you swap the 500GB with the 320GB, then you'll easily be able to get 2GB
You should get 320gb and 2 gb ram, like tools said. Although the Spinpoint f3 is great.
Wow, I go out for a couple of hours to clean my PC and I get 13 responses thanks guys.

And yea as I said I'm not going for anything serious it's more of a hobbyish thing.

I think 15MB down and 15MB up is enough.

Well I'd say some good was worked out. I mean, minus graphically area, these computers are better than a lot of people's home computers.

As long as your ISP doesn't throttle your connection, then it's good.
Could even host a small gameserver if you wanted.

Easily.
1mb can host 12 people on average.
Easily.
1mb can host 12 people on average.
But most people don't have a 1mb upload, and that is what matters when hosting.
Hosting doesnt need as much speed as game servers.

durp
I'd recommend this build; (had to snip before because I'm an idiot)
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=13889352
Reasons;
2 gigs of low voltage ram, instead of only 1 gig.
Going 24/7 and I'll recommend getting some atleast decent cooling.
No need for a quad core, trust me. I'm currently hosting a 52-slot Zombiemod server on an old Athlon 3400+
I've included a flash drive, as it's an excellent oppotunity to learn how to install from USB
Gigabit lan for transfering files faster.
Motherboard supports RAID, so you can swap in an extra drive to get blastering speeds / incredible secure storage.
