So i almost have all my computer parts here (my PSU is still in the mail, everything else has arrived... I think UPS is trolling me) and i don't own any anti-static stuff.
I do have a bunch of cardboard and some rubber gloves. If i cover my work area in cardboard and wear rubber gloves would that negate any potential for ESD? Or is there any common household items i can use to negate ESD? I could just plug in the PSU and touch it before i touch any other parts but i'd like to be very cautious.
pretty sure rubber gloves would be worse, just use your hands and don't worry about it so much. Touch your case occasionally.
Just touch anything metal on your case and you're good to go. Try not to wear socks or put it together in a carpeted area.
My room is hardwood so i don't have to worry about that. As long as i touch the case before handling the motherboard and stuff i should be fine, right? Would cardboard on the floor be a good idea or is that a waste of time?
Waste of time man, just touch the metal on your case to discharge yourself every now and then and you'll be fine.
I put together a system with i5 2500k, 16gb 1600mhz ddr3, gtx580 etc today with no problems. :v:
Install the PSU first, plug it in (but have it off) and touch the case periodically. If the case is grounded (hence the PSU being plugged in), then you will actually discharge the static built up.
Static electricity damage is extremely overrated. The chances that you will actually damage your parts from static is extremely small, even if you build the computer on a static generating surface like carpet. Though I wouldn't recommend building on the floor due to the dirt and dust.

Yea. I built mine on my carpet.
Well, I'd still advise not building on carpet, if possible, but it would probably be fine as long as you aren't using it as a sled or sliding it around.
People are always so afraid of statical electricity, But in reality the chance that anything will happen is smaller then the chance you will trip and headbut your motherboard in half.
Better safe than sorry. All it takes is one zap and you've bricked an expensive piece of equipment.
Even if you don't feel any static discharge, you may be damaging your stuff still and you don't even know it. ESD doesn't always have immediate effects, it may result in lowering the lifespan of something by a few years.

If you're not going to take our advice, just buy a anti-static band, then. Touching the case does the exact same thing (you literally clip the band onto the case anyways).
To be honest, I made my computer and just tapped the radiator every few minutes. I've still not had issues a few years later (other than a harddrive failure, but that was old, and c'est la vie)
