Samurize + Something to watch battery life + temperatures.
Allsnap and the gimp.
In order to avoid downloading and installing all that common stuff (browser, utorrent, messengers, media players, etc), you can use Ninite. That way you just select all those you want, and download a single setup file that installs all these applications you've selected. I find it very useful/practical after formats etc!
Its not so much a program but get the faceraper script for FP. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/16115 Also get steam, and your gonna need some antivirus so if you don't have it I recommend avast free.

Windows Install Clean Up
CDBurnerXP
Office 2003/2007/2010 depending on which you prefer, personally I use both Office 2003 and 2010
uTorrent
HiJackThis (not amateur friendly) Firefox Extensions:
Xmarks
Download Statusbar
Adblock Plus
Any good firewalls?
I like Zonealarm but it can get a bit annoying due to you having to allow ANYTHING in or out of your computer via the internet.
Rocket Dock It's a sidebar/dock for Windows. It look nice, and if you put it on the left or right of your screen, it's dead useful as well. It has quite a few customization options.
Whoa thanks for the heads up on ninite it makes things so much more convenient :O

If you really wanted something to help open programs faster I would just suggest Launchy.
OpenOffice (because it's free)
Foobar2000 and skype
