use a rag + alcohol
I use pure isopropyl alcohol and q-tips to scrape off the thermal compound, and then wipe the areas with a piece of paper towel with alcohol again.
Paper towels are a bad idea. Use coffee filters. They don't leave residue.

I use cotton
I use cotton balls covered in rubbing alcohol.
I use paper towels with rubbing alcohol too. I rub in circles about 4-5 times, if there's still compound just wad around it on the paper towel and dab on some more alcohol. It works. Hell, you can do it with water and a rag. Kinda.
Yeah, I first used Nail Polish Remover thing, but then said fuck it and used some wound cleaning stuff alcohol shitz.
Looking at this thread makes me realize that just scraping it off with a screwdriver probably wasn't a good idea.
hahaha, have fun damaging your processor
Well it was just my old Desktop PC I use for playing around. It still works fine though.
I used the edge of a credit card to scrape the main bulk off, then a Q-tip to get the rest off.
I actually did this yesterday with some alcohol and a lint free t-shirt I was throwing out.
