I'm going to be buying a game server for 2-4 garry's mod servers and a couple tf2 servers. I have no budget, but I would like to stay with in 2k usd.
What it has to have:
A cpu that is easily overclockable to 3.8-4.0 Ghz
Quad core to handle multiple servers at once.
8Gb ram
Everything must run at ddr3.
I don't have a computer so I can't research this so I need your guys's help.
I'll start on it now. I thoroughly enjoy doing servers.
Oh and if possible, the fastest hdds that i can throw into raid 0
Power supply is overkill.
[editline]05:09AM[/editline]
Not much harddrive space either.
I am going to need at least 1tb of hdd for addons and maybe more because I might store some data on it as well.
okay well Assuming you have a kickass connection

Can that processor overclock easy?
yeah and post your connection speed, this will help cooling

will do fine those CPUs should hit 3.0 easy
oh and the mounting bracket [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233027&cm_re=HDt-_-35-233-027-_-Product[/url]
I have a 12mbps connection speed, wish i had fiber optics :-\
[editline]01:08AM[/editline]
That thing looks fast. I will also be needing a monitor and os. Also, i have no experience with servers so is there a web site that can help me? I will be running srdsc for all the game servers (unless there is a better program(s))

hope you know basic programing
Dont know about up yet (computer is missing a video card right now) and i know very basic coding but im also taking some college classes for coding. Also, im rocking a e7500 @ 3.10Ghz, can i run gmod on one core and a small 4-8 man server on the other core? I have 4 gb ram. I want to run a server for some friends and i until all the parts some in and i get the server running.
I think you should research this a bit more
Do you know how to even start a server first?
There are no linux binaries for Gmod so it actually would be better to go with a Microsoft server. Are you running this out of your house or having it at an isp? The ButtsexV2 has a rackmounted case in his while JohnEdwards has a desktop case. Seeing as you're looking for a monitor to go with this I am guessing you don't know that most servers are stored at an isp backbone where they get higher speeds and you pay rent to keep them there. You connect to the server remotely and control it via a text based interface. You do not need a graphics card nor a monitor because of this. If you're just jumping into this without any prior knowledge you may be in for a shock, running a server is nothing like having a desktop in your house.

The most I ever see you using would be 250gb. Most of the time it will be under 100gb

whats your upload?
Seeing as you don't have fiber optics, I'm guessing it's a 12/2 or 12/4, and then there's no point in getting a $2k build
Second of all, why overclock it? Unless it's a completely stable overclock, your servers are gonna get worse performance out of it.
And third, I'd say get an i5 with a zalman 10x extreme and a small case with a good airflow, total price around $700 maybe less.
Use the rest on a good computer for yourself.

how do you purpose to get a output to a screen without a video card?
Onboard Video,
Another thing. You said you know nothing about setting up a server, running a server and so forth. You will want to research on how to do that before you even think about buying a server to run it. You need to know how to properly install the addons in to the server files, models and so forth if you intend on doing that. Along with installing the SRCDS for Garrysmod / TF2.
o the motherboard as a VGA out put wow didn't see that
Well i set up the srcds server before but it was laggy so i stopped that. What i dont know how to do is admin managment and stuff like that on a server. And i think your right, ill just get a 700 dollar build and use the rest for upgrading my main computer.

All you need for a couple of Gmod servers is simple.
Windows XP Pro or Server 2003/2008 + Remote desktop control (google for a microsoft tutorial)
Decent amount of ram, 4GB is a minimum, 8GB would be recommended.
Gigabit lan + crossover cable for less delay when transferring addons/files from your own computer to the server.
Decent ammount of space, 2x500GB or 2x750GB in RAID1 perhaps.
Speedy CPU, 2x Xeon dual 3.0GHz or i5 would probably do.
Very reliable power supply, 400W Corsair would do.
Before buying anything, get a look at the ping in your area.
If you live in central america with the average comcast connection, it's gonna be a no-good ping of 50ms to your neightbour and a 150ms ping to people living in canada, and then you'd be better off renting space at a nearby datacenter.
Just host a server on your normal computer (wired connection of cors), invite a local mate and see what ping he gets.
Personally, my deathrun server gets a ping of 10ms to local players, 30ms to scandinavian players, and 40-50ms to nearby european countries.
These are excellent pings, and for the optimal gaming, you want similiar pings for local people. 20-30ms for a mate living 20 miles away is perfect.
You might wanna take a look at this;

It gives you an idea of what you'll be capable of hosting with your internet connection.

I hear gmod servers run pretty well under wine, but I think that would mean running xorg.
Of course you can always run pure xorg (no de or wm) and wine with the gmod server running.

Power supply isn't overkill for a dual quad-core CPU server system with 12 gigs of ram. This thing would draw at least 500w on load.
Though I see what you're saying about hard drive space. He can always throw in a 1 TB drive, he said he has no budget.
[QUOTE=JohnEdwards;19303759]how do you purpose to get a output to a screen without a video card?[/QUOTE]
You'd need one for Windows because it's retarded like that.
For Linux all you need is SSHd and another computer that does have a screen.
[editline]12:55AM[/editline]
Cutting the video card saves on power bills and cooling. And not running a GUI lowers resource consumption.
