• Does upgrading RAM make my PC faster?

Call me dumb, I don't care. I am completely lost at this shit. All I know is that the more RAM you have, the better. So I have a 6-year old PC with Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz processor and 248MB RAM, running Linux. Right now shit's slow. Starting a Source game makes the PC scream in panic and crash. If I upgrade my RAM - will my PC be faster, and will I be able to run Source Games?
It depends. In your case yes.
It appears so, what is your graphics card? Your processor is fine, I had a P4 until last year and I could run all Source games.
Yay - Windows 7 and no buggy programs ever - here I come! Also AC2 will have to wait for muh XBOX until next week, then...
what graphics card do you have
I have nooo idea. The only specs I found are these: BOARD: ASUSTeK/P4P800/VM VGA: OB/INT/EXTREM CPU: P4 2.8GHz (Oh, look at that :3) HD: 40GB RAM: 256MB (Linux tells me 248MB) [editline]06:32AM[/editline] I feel ashamed of my 40 GB Harddrive. Especially because IF I install Windows 7, I'll lose 10 gig.
If you use Onboard Video it'll prolly still suck I suggest download Pc wizard to see all the components information But yes with only 256m of ram IT IS not enough for todays games aim for 2Gig (2056Meg)
Intel Extreme? You should get a graphics card too. Well, everything needs replacing really, but an onboard won't help.

Buy a low-end GeForce 6200. It's only 256MB but it'll play every Source game and then some.
I guess since its 6 year old its an Agp lucky you itll be cheap
I found some RAM sticks for a good price on a Swedish site. Now about gwappiks kard: How much of an emergency would it be to upgrade to run a Source game well?
Then, A: WE need to know if the motherboard even has pci-e. B: The power supply wattage, and if it has an open 4pin/6pin. C: and the kind of ram the motherboard accepts. Allright first of all Download http://www.filehippo.com/download_everest_home/ Install and make a screen shot of the hardware and well go from there
256mb of ram? :geno: you need atleast 2gb mang
That's SO not what this thread is about...
I know that video card, it will run some source games on all lowest settings at around 18 FPS, assuming you're actually using a version of Windows, and not playing through wine. Playable, but by no means enjoyable. You'll want to upgrade to 1 GB RAM and a different video card, something like an 8400 GS or HD 4350 at minimum.
Your going to put Windows 7 on that machine? Good luck.
I think i remember some one say that you would atleast need 4Gb of RAM for Garry's Mod to run with hardly any lag.
I think i remember some one say that you would atleast need 4Gb of RAM for Garry's Mod to run with hardly any lag.
GMod ran fine on my HP system with 2GB of RAM.
same
I think i remember some one say that you would atleast need 4Gb of RAM for Garry's Mod to run with hardly any lag.
I was able to play gmod on my old rig with only 256MB RAM. Load up takes a while, but the actual gameplay is not too bad
Why not XP?
Why not XP?
Because XP installs, and SEEMS to work fine, but internet and sound is kaputski. And installing drivers won't work. Trust me, i tried... ---
Your going to put Windows 7 on that machine? Good luck.
Windows 7 is proven to work on 6-7 year old computers. It's been run kinda smoothly under Pentium 3. Dis be Pentium 4 dawg. It's modern shit.
Build new computer. No way you can save that 6 year old setup.

Close - Swedish. Kaputski is Russian-English for "kaput". I'm NOT buying a new PC. I got this one for 10 bucks, and I'll upgrade it as much as I can. I can save tons that way.
Enclose it in an air-tight moisture free case and bury it six feet into the ground. unearth 30 years later and profit.
Good idea, I can use it when it is six feet under the ground soooo well. :downs:

NO NEW COM then. get 4 GB of ram then and you'll be fine for win 7.
