I'll hope and assume you have at least some knowledge of how each of the weapons listed below work before answering. If you don't, google something quickly up, it gives you an overly simplified version and idea, giving you some hint of what would suit you best.
Anyway, I want to see what kind of melees you would prefer. Options below~
Two-handed
-Greatswords
-Battleaxes
-Greathammers
-Halberds
-Clubs
One-handed
-Longswords
-Shortswords
-Daggers
-Pickhammers
-Hatchets
-Maces
Shields used with One-handed weapons
-Buckler
-Targe
-Kite
-Large shields (such as scuta)
My personal choice would be a Zweihänder, a german greatsword but without the front bladestopper.
Either 2 daggers, or a shortsword + a dagger.
I'm quite lightfooted even my size (athletic build, 6ft 1) and love the speed and grace you often see/read about with the use of these weapons. Claws could even come into play here.
However, a longsword/one handed axe and a kite shield would also be good. as a secondary option.
Ooh, tough one.
I'd say...Fox only, no items, aaaand Final Destination.
Warhammer and shield.
Double wielding Short swords
Double handed shield :downs:
Greatsword.
Fuck parrying I just want to swing my blade like a madman.
The usual swordsman. A normal one-handed sword and a shield.
Or go Viking with a huge warhammer.
A very long medieval pike.

It is true that lighter weapons can make you faster. But if you use the greatsword's weight correctly, you can use it's momentum and instead of starting a new attack, continuing the same one and keeping the force on the blade itself. You can achieve fast striking but it really requires good control and experience. Something I've still got to work on a bit personally. But if anyone feels like they want to be fast and swing huge swords, this is the technique for you.
One thing I could try someday would be two longswords. It would allow me to be twice as offensive and also be slightly more defensive than using a greatsword. Only problem is that dualing longswords is difficult as fuck and I only have access to one longsword. Oh well :saddowns:
Have you tried using a spear?
A spear with a long short-sword length, curved blade at the tip instead of a spike entices me greatly so.
You could get a weighted stick or iron bar that is of a similar length and weight to the sword to practice dual movements.

Your description sounds strikingly similar to that of a halberd's. It's basically a long spear with an axe-like blade attached to the end of it, making it a hybrid of the two.
Also, a weighted stick doesn't have the correct aerodynamics and therefore would actually worsen my proficiency at duals.

Halberd;

I've found halberds are 99% axe-blade-esque tipped.
What I was thinking of:

Close enough, anyway.
I usually use longswords and daggers on oblivion when I'm not raping with my bow

Oooh, a naginata. Those were used as extreme long-range katana and used that long shaft of theirs to build power and practically smash through enemy armor. Did you know those are a bit hefty?

I do now. I just love the concept of them and the design. The fact that you have a sword blade on a quaterstaff = win.
A longsword and a parrying dagger, or a halberd.
Longsword.
On l4d2: the axe

That can be less than ideal since halberds are usually meant for two ha-
Oh wait, I misread that. You'd actually be better off with a shield replacing the dagger.

I bet that these would be pretty damn badass.

After prolonged use those kill your joints. I'm not kidding. Not to mention parrying with those is nigh impossible, they can't really penetrate through armour and only would work well in stealthy attacks. One of those into your spinal cord = fatality.
I personally like spears and staves.
Dual-wielding a sword and axe, berserker style, or wielding oversized weapons. Greatmace, greataxe, greatsword. Anything that relies on the body's core strength to build up momentum.

Most berserkers actually used either spears or battleaxes. Spears could be thrown and you could pierce someone from the stomach, then lift him up and move your spear around to make his body roll around your spear like a ragdoll. Some berserkers did this to demoralize their foes and make them afraid. Worked wonders on some groups, I hear.
Long-sword and a smaller version of the tower shield.
Halberds are the best agaisn't heavily armored oponents, though, that shield-dodger spike that's perpendicular to the axe blade is great.
Improvised weaponry, I'll take two tonfas.
Either the two handed club for me, or a truncheon with a buckler.
I prefer the clean effectiveness of blunt trauma to the messy blood everywhere of swords. Besides, if I can quickly disable people with a single blow, I'm all for it.
Though, if possible to get my hands on, a morning star would be nice.
