• Higher resolution, less FPS?

My friend on Steam told me if you use a higher resolution, your computer will have to use more resources to generate the picture, his maximum resolution is 1650x650 or something around that, and he uses the resolution 1280x720. My maximum resolution is 1440x900 and I used 1280x1024 right now, but what should I use, my maximum resolution or 1280x1024 which is LCD and my moniter is LCD.
How are you managing to run a 1440x900 monitor at 1280x1024? That means your game is rendering more vertical pixels than your monitor can even display. Source only labels 1280x1024 as (LCD) because years ago when LCDs were emerging, 1280x1024 was the most common resolution, but it's 5:4 aspect ratio instead of the then-normal 4:3. But 1440x900 is less total pixels than 1280x1024, so just use 1440x900.
I happen to notice that your frame rate drops on higher resolutions, they also use benchmark tests on different resolutions. Which is why your frames per second should be higher in a standard definition (480i). [editline]05:37AM[/editline] tl;dr Yes. It does.

First you should probably double check what your maximum resolution actually is (since it seems like you might not know). 1. Right click your desktop and click "Properties" or "Personalize" 2. Go to your display settings 3. Slide the resolution slider all the way to the right and see what it says If your max resolution really is 1440x900, that means you have a 16:10 monitor so in your Source games make sure you select 16:10 in the aspect ratio drop down box before choosing your resolution. If you don't, no matter what resolution you choose the image is going to look distorted on your monitor. And why the hell are people rating this guy dumb? He's asking for information and you're just making fun of him for not already knowing? Assholes.

You might as well run your monitor at the maximum resolution and utilize its full potential and lower your game settings a bit rather than lower the resolution.
Higher resolution = lower performance. Except sometimes in cases where the CPU/GPU aren't balanced.
Just use whatever resolution lets the game be fast enough for you.
If you're able to use your max resolution without lag, then go for it. I only change to a low resolution if I am recording or doing anything else that makes my game lag.
I  at this thread.
I personally like to have higher resolution at the cost of lower setting, it just makes the game feel more crisp and lively. But if your GPU can't handle it just go for a lower resolution or tinker a bit with the setting to the find the balance between performance and quality.
I always got lower framerate with my screen resolution maxed. But then again that was years ago when I thought the Pentium 4 and an nVidia GeForce 7600 was the best thing ever

I run my games at 1280x800 (windowed mode) on my 1440x900 LCD, so I can crank the visuals higher and maintain the same FPS.
