Ok, as far as video editing and gaming (not anything extreme), how powerful is my laptop? OS: Windows 7 64 bit Processor: AMD E-350 directX11 GC: AMD Raedon HD 6310 1.60 GHz 3 gigs of RAM
it isnt
Ok, sorry for the dumb question. I am not very tech savvy compared to facepunch.
Really low in terms of performance
A laptop won't be really powerful without burning your legs and being within a reasonable price range. But it's not powerful it will run a couple of games though.
A laptop won't be really powerful without burning your legs and being within a reasonable price range.
I have to strongly disagree. I managed to get an excellent laptop (ASUS N53SV) for a good deal (599€) in my retail store. Of course, it would heat up a little when doing 3D gaming, but I don't think putting your laptop on your legs/bed is really pratical for that kind of use.
I've the same, very good laptop, can launch a lot of games (crysis/crysis 2) at medium/high with a 25 to 40 fps.
That's funny, because Crysis (the first one) is the only game so far that crashed my laptop twice, while it can run Metro 2033 correctly. But aside from that, it's really a good laptop for a lot of tasks.
AMD Fusion laptops can't do any 3d gaming, but good for the price.

Although I still prefer to use it on a table of some sort just for comfort reasons while I'm gaming.
Your processor supports DX11 and your GPU is 1.6Ghz?
Your processor supports DX11 and your GPU is 1.6Ghz?
Actually didn't see that before

I have used desktops my entire life, and for 1300 out the door cost, I am going to love the mobility.
I have used desktops my entire life, and for 1300 out the door cost, I am going to love the mobility.
Except these kind of laptops have very limited mobility (mostly because of their heavy weight, and vey short battery life. Needless to say about the noise/heat when gaming or doing a huge task) If you really want a laptop, take a multimedia laptop at the best (which has a good graphic card such as GT 540M-GT 555M for example). Mine can run every game correctly with medium/high settings (and some with full max settings). Otherwise you're just wasting your money for a bigger graphic card that may just be 'useful' for only two-three games. Take note that you can't really upgrade on a laptop (except HDD and RAM), and that the components will be easily outdated soon or later. Stick with a desktop with you just want pure and enhanced performance. Laptops are not made for that [editline]27th September 2011[/editline] I say that, because I also used to have desktops before, but I didn't spend a shitload of money on a laptop like you want to do.
I get where you're coming from but 1300 isn't really a "shitload" of money.
I get where you're coming from but 1300 isn't really a "shitload" of money.
Yes it is.
Similar issue. Can my 18th month old laptop handle BF3? i70 q720 @1.60ghz Ram: 8gb Windows 7, 64bit nvidia gts 360m 1gb (though CanYouRunIt says it's only 476mb) Do you think this could run Battlefield and/or Skyrim okay? My xbox is fucked at this computer is my current option. It plays Crysis on high at about 30-40fps usually.

They are only a bad idea if all you do is game at home. I spent £2000 on my Alienware m15x, why you might ask? well because I moved to an entirely different country where I need to take my pc to two different offices during the weekdays because they have no computer for me there. I can now also take this beast back to the UK at Christmas because I have no computer there either. Don't criticize somebody's opinion for wanting a laptop if you have no clue how they are going to incorporate it into every day life. I could not work without this laptop and the GTX 460 in it works perfectly for games or viewing CAD designs and whatever else I have to do at work. And yet your telling me "dont get a gaming laptop they suck, get a desktop" Also, you can upgrade a laptop with a CPU and GPU too, after all is just a motherboard they use. It depends if the chassis of the laptop can take it. I do agree Desktops can be more powerful and cost efficient. But depending on your circumstances then you get what you need to.
I get where you're coming from but 1300 isn't really a "shitload" of money.
That's about 3-4 months of taxes that I have to pay, and twice the price of my laptop. I use it for both work and games. But things are you're buying a laptop which has just a 'better' graphic card (while actually it's amazing that the GT540M is able to run every game on High settings, though no AA most of time). That's why I said earlier about the poor performance/price in gaming laptops. And yeah, I still find stupid as fuck to spend so much money on a laptop, when you could save up for more important things. It's not like it was my money, of course, but I can voice my disagreement on that kind of thing.
Also, you can upgrade a laptop with a CPU and GPU too, after all is just a motherboard they use. It depends if the chassis of the laptop can take it.
It may be possible theoretically, but it's a lot harder to change that kind of stuff on a laptop, hardly worth the price, and may cause problems (like you said, it depends of the chassis).

But for our sitiuations its perfect. I have nothing to do right now, i'm in the office playing Deus Ex and loving it. I agree it is pointless to upgrade a laptop, but it can be done. I prefer desktops don't get me wrong. But I think Gaming laptops are worth the money if you can take advantage of it's mobility. and by mobility i mean it can go from place to place fairly easily. Of course you can voice your dissagrement.. just not over here in china incase th... who are you? why are you in my offi.. oh shit
I get where you're coming from but 1300 isn't really a "shitload" of money.
When that's over a month's wage, yes it is.
When that's over a month's wage, yes it is.
If that is more than the money you make in a month you are either in high school, or the poorest person in america. Honestly people on welfare have more money than that in a month. if you worked 8 hours a day and made 1300 $, you would be making 5.40... do you by chance live in Africa?
If that is more than the money you make in a month you are either in high school, or the poorest person in america. Honestly people on welfare have more money than that in a month.
No they don't.
No they don't.
you get 1200 dollars just for housing a month if you are a single mother with a child, you also get 150 in food stamps, 584, and money for clothes if needed. Oh did I mention all the benefits you get too? I almost forgot, if you apply, they also supply you with gas, and the ability to get a lot more money for a better house if you apply for it.
http://www.welfareinfo.org/payments/ "Cash allowance benefits for financial assistance will also be state regulated and allowances paid will also vary based on different criteria. However, an average expectation can be placed on a family of 4 receiving up to $900 for their TANF allowance. A single person household can expect an average of up to $300." :colbert:
