• Steam write privileges error

I've installed steam into an external hard drive to try and save space and keep crap out of the internal. It was working fine last night when I installed, but now I get this error message every time I run the application: Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to write to the current Steam application folder. Please move Steam to a folder where you have write privileges. Google hasn't given me anything useful on the matter, and I've tried giving it full security privileges in properties in addition to running as administrator to no avail. Does anyone have a clue how I can fix this without moving Steam into the C drive? Oh, and UAC are off.

This problem is persisting with any actions on the drive now, must be since I reformatted it yesterday. Should have mentioned this before, but my OS is vista and I think the h-drive is a Maxtor Onetouch or something like that. It's proving to be a bitch to find any solution I can understand.
