Guild and 2 in the same game title, suddenly got me all excited :(
This is an absolutely wonderful game, great fun if you like those kind of 'sim' games. The only problem with it is vanilla, it's bug ridden, but with both the official and unofficial patches it becomes playable, and even gets more content. I've only played pirates of the caribbean tho, the newest one is the reinassance one.
The biggest concern you might've is the multiplayer is broken, or atleast that's what people say, I've never tried it but apparently people complain about it. If you manage to get it working then you'll have a lot of fun, but you'll have it regardless of wether you get it working or not.
What more can I say to convince you, I guess I can tell you you can play as a nechromancer priest, marry and have children, make sermons at your church, burn down the enemy churches to remove the priest competence or kill them straight away, you can apply for political jobs including executioner and stuff like that.
Hell, you can even be a pirate or a bandit, it's fukken awesome, you'll enjoy it if you're into that kind of 'sim' stuff

A mix of rpg and sim probably best describes it

It's a medieval asshole simulator, really what's not to like
I think I played this a few times ages ago, was decent
If I buy the collection with 'Renaissance' and 'Pirates of the European Seas', is it like the Sims 3 where it's all under one game, or are they separate?
All you need is Renaissance, has everything and is standalone.
Unless you can patch the Steam version then this isn't worth getting.
Also, Renaissance has absolutely no tutorial or even a campaign, so only get it if you want to play sandbox mode and learn by trial and error.
