You need to have half-life installed, and mounted onto the game. That's usually why theres purple-black checkered boxes.

Uninstall Garrysmod, and delete your steamapps/username/garrysmod folder, reinstall HL2 and whatever other source games you have, run them and just play a mission or just load the game, w/e, and then reinstall garrysmod. This should work.
