"Look at me not ignoring people saying bad things on the internet"
Need to learn that all people on the internet aren't going to bend over and suck your cock really, need to get it in your head to ignore haters and not let them get to you, the fact that he has given up or, well, addressing the haters is just giving them the satisfaction.
Look at me not ignoring people saying bad things on the internet
Why do people never listen to this advice
Anyone who says otherwise just gives more weight and credit to the people who are 'bullying/insulting' other people online. The less attention you give them the happier you'll be, simple as that.
Just do your thing and take it easy, it's not hard.
Look at me not ignoring people saying bad things on the internet
It's not just "people saying bad things on the internet" as in youtube commenters. These are other people from the same communities, some of which have actually done stuff.
It's not just CoDH8trGTAFTW'01 that says some mean things, it's that dude you thought were cool, that dude who helped you out when you were stuck with that one problem in your massive graphical overhaul.
This is why we can't have nice things.

I think you guys are really underestimate the sheer amount of hate you attract when you get internet-famous. I don't blame the modder one bit, why would you even want to work on this when you just get insulted afterwards and the happy majority stays silent? And guys like you just say he has to 'deal with it'?
Its shit like this that makes me hate people.
That the antagonistic minority ruin it for the Majority.
I think you guys are really underestimate the sheer amount of hate you attract when you get internet-famous. What's the other alternative? Stop developing it and letting the minority be happy while the majority have to disappointed? He does have the right, completely, to just stop developing it for his own reasons. But to stop because there are assholes on the internet giving him abuse? I don't know, that seems kinda silly that does.
"lol just ignore it" works for robots, not people.
I stopped publicly modding video games a long time ago for this same reason. I mod video games for fun, but when people did nothing but jump down my throat cussing me out over the most trivial things, I had others telling me my mods were broken because they're too lazy to take 3 seconds to read a readme file on how to install it properly or didn't understand what a mod conflict was, so therefore it must mean my core mod is 100% malicious because the mod user knows it all, right?
It's really easy to say "hurr just ignore the bad things on the internet" when you've never been in this situation. The sheer volume of negativity you can potentially receive from just a few mods is unreal.

What's there to underestimate? Bad PR is still PR, with added bonus that nobody will see it for the first time and be "so THAT's the worst thing ever I've been told about so much?"
Thick skin is pretty important.

They don't stay silent, are you serious?
It's only himself who just scrolls through hundreds of "nice man, thanks" comments and only fixates on "shit mod kill yourself" comments.
You only give more weight to the hate as long as you pretend like famous people are fragile little things who can be thrown into mental turmoil over one random person going "fuck you". And victim blaming is irrelevant here because there is no victim. No one is getting hurt. You literally choose to be hurt by online text from strangers.

While it's true they don't stay silent, not everyone has the same problem TotalBiscuit has where they completely ignore positive comments. (No disrespect intended towards TB.)
For every 1 positive comment I'd get, I got about 6 negative ones that were almost all personal attacks on me when at the end of the day I was just trying to share a mod I made that I wanted others to enjoy too...
Positive comments are nice, and so was hearing genuinely constructive criticism and ideas others had that they shared with me, but it ultimately gets drowned out in the excessive negativity being exhumed from everyone else. I never ignored positive comments when I publicly modded years ago, but the excessive negativity overpowers the few positive comments and if something is bringing someone more stress than anything else, it shouldn't be a surprise or hard to understand why we stopped.
3 years of communities like this was enough for me, thick skin doesn't last forever no matter who you are.
Maybe it's a bit hard to ignore people on the internet when you're getting tons of hateful messages a day?
Gee I wonder how that would upset a person, it's only the internet after all!

yea
garry is "internet famous" now because of rust and he kind of seems to be dealing with it quite nicely.
if text on a screen can hurt you emotionally you shouldn't be working on the screen at all

guess what
somebody writes the text that appears on the screen!
that means that an actual person is behind the text and is taking time out of their lives to personally attack you!

i never would have guessed that for text to appear on a computer it has to be written by somebody i appreciate you clearing that up
[editline]sd[/editline]
if everyone thought the same way as you nothing would even exist because they'd be too scared of getting "personally attacked".
im sure glad that's not the case. if you want a better counter argument, here's this: it doesn't matter because people that make things and innovate are still doing it, if you were right they wouldn't be making anything at all

how is this hard to comprehend
one troll comment =/= hundreds of people telling you that your work is shit and/or telling you to kill yourself

jesus christ
it's over, mr microsoft should quit
mr sony should quit shut down the companies
hundreds of people told the ceos of each to kill themselves, ahem, millions of people told them to kill themselves. what were they supposed to do? NOT kill themselves????

ever heard about the whole "it's way more easy to diss someone when you'll never meet in person and he's on the other side of the Earth"?

just think about it
you stop doing whatever you liked to do because some (not even all) don't like it
get over it
All these people that think you can just "grow a thick skin" and brush off such hate should go watch Totalbiscuit's old logs where he talks about how much the constant stream of hate has impacted him. The man is in his early 20's and his hair is turning grey and falling out. He also has to seek professional help for stress. as well as take medications because the stress is actually impacting his bodily health in a bad way.
This "just ignore it" attitude couldn't be more ignorant. Such a thing is easy to say when you're an antisocial nobody who has never actually had to deal with a situation like this.
TotalBiscuit is 30.
I like the implication of this though:-
if everyone thought the same way as you nothing would even exist because they'd be too scared of getting "personally attacked".
Yes, those evil hypothetical creators not giving out their work just because they don't let people be shits for no reason!
It's horrendous how people take abuse on the Internet as a given, sure 4chan will probably always exist but that doesn't give you the right to harass people.

it's a given on the internet because people are anonymous. you can't fix it, people will be toxic when there is no consequences to doing so, so you have to deal with it or stop using it.
that's what this guy did, but not what everyone else is doing. and like i said, if everyone else did the same thing then nothing would be invented or created anymore. it's not like i'm wrong, it's weird that you're trying to argue against my point when it's just basic logic. some people are cunts, most people aren't. deal with it.

Except that there are absolutely consequences, the person being an asshole just doesn't see them.
This guy called out on the people giving him grief when he quit, he didn't just stop doing what he was doing and vanish. Giving up on trying to prevent pointless harassment isn't a useful solution, as it will only deter future content creators with less tolerance to this kind of bullshit from releasing their things, is that an acceptable scenario? Trying to write it off as "just basic logic" is pretty abhorrent, in the long term.

if being blocked by someone was a consequence that they respected then they wouldn't be negative.
that's what i meant, of course there are consequences like getting banned or whatever, but it doesn't stop people from being toxic? you can't fix it and if you could fix it, why isn't it fixed already? no one likes haters
People need to learn to leave each other alone
How do you gain anything by hating on some random dude and his mod?
growing a thick skin, unfortunately, isn't as easy as just glossing over a personal attack on yourself and thinking, "oh wow he insulted me, well fuck him idc". it's sometimes hard to forget that someone out there actually took the time to spew hateful bullshit at you, regardless if it was done with anonymity or not.
has anyone ever considered that maybe if you get send dozens of death threats and attacks, you might have done something wrong? they might have a point? you might actually deserve them in certain circumstances?
