When headphones are plugged into my HP G60 120-EM laptop which runs Linux Mint 9, The speakers are not muted resulting in both playing at the same time. I've found many different solutions but cant get any to work. I'm using the ALSA sound drivers. I can't even mute the speakers separately without muting the headphones as well.
Any solutions?
Can you not even manually change them using alsamixer? Or does that not work? "Front" should be laptop speakers.
Alsamixer in the terminal and the GUI. Where can I find Front?

Oh, that's different from my setup. Just fiddle with them until you find the one that turns down the laptop speakers.
I have tried, but they turn down both the speakers and the headphones at the same time. It seems as if the speaker and the headphones are merged into one.
Do you have USB headphones?
Nope.
Try updating ALSA manually, fixed the problem atleast for me.
