I'm using this Dell laptop which is ~6-7 years old. About twenty minutes ago I noticed a light was flashing that is usually reserved for when the battery is low. However, the laptop was plugged in and charging, according the the battery status, it was at 100%. Upon removing the charger to determine what was wrong, the laptop shut off. When I booted it up again I received a prompt telling me that my battery was not supported by Dell (I have been using the same battery since I received the laptop). Tech support hasn't helped so far because my warranty has expired.
I asked my friend about it and he said my laptop was basically fucked. Would this be the case or could there be some way of fixing it?

Unfortunately I don't know any specific information at the moment that could help, but I can probably provide any additional information when asked.
Your battery might be screwed, 6-7 years is many years. One of my friends managed to make it die after 2 minutes after 2 months use (To be fair it was third-party)
7 years is extremely old for a laptop battery, it's not surprising that it finally failed.
The laptop isn't "fucked" because of a dead battery, your friend is an idiot.
You can get a replacement battery on Amazon or any number of online retailers. Just type in your laptop model and "battery" after it to get a match for what you need. Here's one on Amazon (don't know if it's available in Australia or not)
