Back when I used Linux full-time (I think it was Ubuntu 8.10), the ATI drivers sucked balls at 3d and if you wanted to play any games, you had to have an nvidia GPU.
How are the ATI drivers nowadays? Do they still suck balls at 3d? My new GPU (5xxx series) should arrive soon and if the drivers are any good, I'll probably dual-boot Ubuntu on this computer.
5xxx still doesn't do 3D iirc, 4xxx does it decently though.
So the ATI driver team is drinking coffee while jacking off while nvidia's guys are actually doing something?
Bleargh.
Actually...
Yeah.
Sigh this is something very bad to ask. Each side will say the other is always better. Nvidia dont release drivers in a pattern where ATI try to get them out at the same time every month.
From experience, I can say ATI drivers are getting better, but still seem to get problems such as, fixing the Bad Company 2 loading bug, then 3 driver releases later it pops back up.
I just bypass all the issues and buy nvidia. I'm alright with spending a little extra for decent drivers.
I have a 5870 and I can run HL2/TF2/Unreal Tournament 3/Portal at a good framerate with 10.6 >_>. I recommend buying an Nvidia card anyways though because Wine likes their drivers much more.
Boy this is comforting to hear considering I just ordered my 5770 yesterday.
:ohdear:
My order's been collecting dust on the shop floor for a week now. They better get me my new GPU soon.
If Steam gets released for Linux, I think Linux drivers will start to improve.
Never had a problem with my Radeon Xpress 200M, or my Radeon 7000 yet. ATi Drivers are rockin' so far. They usually let me use Compiz from a LiveCD, something nVidia won't let me do.
I made a video of my rig with a 5870/phenom II X4 running HL2 Episode 2 maxed in Linux

How do i completely remove the ATI drivers from Ubuntu 10.04? I found out that the one i have is probably some old version (it says CCC version is 2.12 - WTF?). I want to install the 10.7 version.
sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx
...or click this link, and follow the instructions on post #2:

When i try that it just says the package xorg-driver-fglrx is not installed. Is it ok if i just install the new driver over the old one?
That means the driver apparently isn't there.
