• Xbox One Controller on Windows 7

This seems like a straight-forward enough question, but Google just has a not-too helpful article from Microsoft, and some installers that don't seem to work. The Microsoft article mentions that I should be able to use the Device Manager on Windows 7 to scan for drivers online. The Xbox One controller, which I've directly wired with different micro USB cables, simply shows up as "Controller" in it, which I have scan for drivers online, which fails to find anything after about 5-10 minutes. Has anyone reliably installed drivers for the controller on Windows 7? I just did a completely fresh install and still had the same problem, so I'm at a loss.
Automatic installation is still broken on Windows 7 afaik but make sure you're fully updated, if it doesn't work you have grab it from the ancient update catalog system to get around that. If you don't trust me, the instructions are on the Microsoft page. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-on-windows/accessories/connect-xbox-one-controller-to-pc#H1
Automatic installation only works well on Windows 8 and above. I've installed drivers for both Xbox 360 (and dong-le) and Xbox One controllers on Windows 7 back when I had it, never had a problem.

It's probably not smart, but I trust some drivers themselves more than the generic installer .exes I've found on the first few google results. Not sure why it's rated dumb, that's what Cold said to do in his instructions. Also tried it through the device manager with no results.
I've got the offical driver in my mega account now (64bit): https://mega.nz/#!Ah9jWL7b!wa-U4hgSKKMvd12hUz54QgZSBhIsHWliZD0tPHv381U
