• How could I set up a simple 2-computer lan?

I want to set up a lan between my desktop and a friend's laptop to play some games etc. So how would I go about connecting them, Do I just connect them with an ethernet cable? Sorry I don't know a lot about networking
Just connect the computers to a router.
You can use a cord between the two computers, and assign static IPs to each of the computers. You can also plug into a router if you have one available and that will take care of IP assignation if it has a DHCP server.
If you connect them to a switch or a router their IP addresses will automatically be assigned and you can just connect them and go. If you connect the computers point to point you will need to manually assign each computer an IP address.
I don't want to use a router because I don't have one to spare. And I've already assigned static IPs to them both. So I'm guessing just using a cord will work now?
If you've set the IP addresses correctly then yes it should work.
if they are connected to the same network they will work
Statically setting the IPs should be within the class C IP range with the appropriate subnet. Or alternatively, you can host a DHCP server on one of your machines.
