• Mild PC upgrade - £500 aim

Hey guys, had this PC since around 2008 (Tescos Online bought, hah) with a few little upgrades but the CPU is starting to show its age - figured I'd take the opportunity to clean out the cobwebs! Current build: Vista 64-bit CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz Mobo:Foxconn G31MX Series (Socket 775) RAM: 4GB DDR2 @ 399MHz GPU: AMD Radeon HD 5870 Case: Cooler Master Centurion 5 HDD1: 699GB Samsung HD753LJ HDD2:1863GB Western Digital WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 I'm primarily gaming, but since going to uni I'm doing more intense modelling, rendering and game engine work. I've got dual 1080p screens so multi-tasking is a major thing. Since they seem relatively cheap right now, I'd like to use this opportunity to go for one of the newer ones. The things I'll be keeping are my graphics card, case and HDDs. So to keep it all together, heres the final build with the shit I'm gonna buy. (underlined means I own it already) http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1Khf9 Windows 8 64bit CPU: Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz - (£225) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler - (£24) Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP ATX LGA1150 Motherboard - (£93.90) RAM: Kingston 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£114.91) GPU: AMD Radeon HD 5870 Case: Cooler Master Centurion 5 HDD1: 699GB Samsung HD753LJ HDD2: 1863GB Western Digital WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 So main issues: + Motherboard -- Trying to research these feels like taking a belt-sander to the brain, is this a good choice? I visit this section occasionally to see what people have been suggesting, but seems to vary quite often. + RAM -- Again, might be excessive, but right now the budget is kinda allowing for that. Wanting this PC to last, hopefully as long as my current one has! But yeah hoping to build this with my brother after Christmas! Can't think of anything else to add to this, thanks in advance guys [editline]14th December 2013[/editline] Forgot to add, power supplies. Mine currently is a Zoostorm Titan 650!
I would strongly urge you to buy a new PSU. IT seems like that Titan 650 is really bad, and adding more power consuming objects could fry your entire system, so unless you have reason to believe that they make good PSUs (which I don't, all I can find on google is mentions of having cheap noisy PSUs and no actual reviews), get a new PSU. If you want this build to be overclockable, you need to get a 4770k. If you don't, you should get an H87/H81/B85 motherboard and dump the heatsink and just use the stock one. Here's my recommendation: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2ka0o The motherboard is a bit lower end, but you don't loose any really important features. You can just try and keep your old PSU, especially since it's a good bit below its rated wattage, but unbranded unreviewed PSUs are unpredictable and could explode at any time. Use at your own risk.

Glad mine's lasted this long then :v: I probably won't do any overclocking, wouldn't like to take that much risk with something most my shit haha Cheers for the warning and the new recommended parts, looks like a suitable course!
