Between this and "Xbox One" I'm starting to think the people at Microsoft who decide names can't count.
12 will probably be the last version for 7, since they've pretty much started work on it (and Windows 7 is still in mainstream phase). 14 (seeing as how Microsoft skipped 13 for Office) will probably be exclusive to 8.1 onwards.

There are some changes involving WDDM 2.0 and the surrounding kernel infrastructure planned/in windows 10 and DX12.
Its always technically possible, but if they have to backport major kernel changes that happened in windows 8 or windows 10 too windows 7 in order for DX12 to function its probably not going to happen.

Well when you have a shitload of badly programmed legacy software that checks for "Windows 9" to detect 95/98 you're kind of forced to skip a number.
