• Computer blew up

I was playing the Medal of honor beta today (it's around 29 degrees outside) when I heard a loud bang followed by the computer turning off and now refuses to boot. I looked inside and can't see anything visibly damaged. Anyone got any clues on what could be damaged and needs replacing?
Power supply is the best place to start.
If you can't see anything inside the case that gives a clue, chances are your PSU is fried.
Any way to check if it was the power suply?
Any way to check if it was the power suply?
Replace it with a new power supply.
Test your components in another computer. RAM, Video Card, Hard Drives.
Replace it with a new power supply.
Don't have any laying around so I would rather be sure that i is the power supply before buying a new one
Power supply is the best place to start.
^This Also, check each of the capacitors on your motherboard. Its possible some of them leaked or exploded. Also, to test your PSU you can short 2 pins and force it to turn on. If it doesn't turn on when you short the pins, its definitely your problem. What kind of power supply is it?
probably a cheap $10 one
An easy way to detect a blown power supply is to actually smell if it has a very funky/strong odor coming from the fan portion on the back of the PC. If it does, then you have a now dead power supply. That pop was one of the capacitors blowing out inside the PSU.
Pepper;22927528']probably a cheap $10 one
Close, just looked up the model: http://www.custompcwarehouse.co.uk/acatalog/450_WATT_WINPOWER_PSU_12cm_SILENT_20_24_PIN.html So it probably was the power supply.
Never heard of 'em.
Test your psu without the motherboard. http://aphnetworks.com/tutorials/psu_paperclip_trick
Hopefully it didn't damage any other parts.
-snip-
its for sure the power supply, the same thing happened to me, heard a huge bang and saw a big spark come from inside my case. Scared the shit out of me. Replaced the powersupply though and works as good as new
Yep. A good chance.
I came here thinking it actually exploded.
I came here thinking it actually exploded.
I thought it literally exploded.
I thought it literally exploded.
this
As people have said before, it's probably a capacitor in the power supply that blew up.
I had a similar problem once and it was the power supply's fuse that blew up. Soldered another one and worked as a charm.
I wouldn't do this, OP's power supply isn't really good in the first place, better off just buying a new one rather than trying to save it.
I thought it literally exploded.
:raise: I thought he just threw a firecracker in it
I thought it literally exploded.
In a way it did. Or at least the PSU part, this loud bang means a short circuit. Buying a new one is your best option seeing as manually replacing stuff there may put your whole computer at risk.
It either is you're processor or you're power supply.
It either is you're processor or you're power supply.
he is a processor or a psu?
Easy way to test the PSU is to take out the 20 or 24 pin power connector (biggest one) and use a paper clip to short one green and one black pin together. Just leave a fan plugged in. If it turns on, its probably not the PSU.
Bought a new PSU today, plugged everything in and it works perfectly now. Thanks for your help
