Accidentally Left Desktop On - Remote Shutdown Recommendations?
8 replies, posted
I intentionally left my desktop on for the first three days of my spring break so I could use Autocad remotely, I finished my session with it, and unfortunately closed Teamviewer in the process (My desktop is 250 miles away from me). Its Win 7 Home Premium, so no Remote Desktop and I unfortunately didn't put an SSH host on it.
Any other options for a remote shutdown? If not, can I be safe to say that my desktop can idle for a week? (The idle temps are ~25 Deg C)
Thanks
At my most negligent, I've left my computer running nonstop for like 2 weeks with slight usage over that time before finally shutting down for updates (unchecked depression really kills any drive to do even the simplest of tasks :v:). Frankly, I don't see the harm in leaving it idle for that amount of time if you're not actually using it and your hardware idles at a reasonable temperature. 25 degrees is well within reason, I'd think, so you should be fine imo. Definitely get a second opinion, though, as I'm hardly the most knowledgeable on the subject. I just know that my AMD|NVidia shitbox has weathered far worse and come out[sp]mostly[/sp]intact.
Some people almost never turn their PC off, yours will be fine idling for a week, especially with those temps
As above, you'll be fine. Only thing you'll need to worry about is the electricity bill.
Thanks for the advice guys, I'm just really protective of my desktop.
Just ask someone to turn it off?
I normally just ssh into it for stuff like that but I can assume It's a windows desktop.

My dorm hall is closed, I had intended to put an SSH host/Putty on it but never got around to it. Now I have a reason to do so :v:
My system automatically hibernates after an hour or so of 0 user activity, yours might do the same now you have closed teamviewer. If not, no harm done my friend keeps his pc on constantly and it still runs well after ~4 years of usage.

I first read that as you literally getting close to your tower and going "shhhh" into it to turn it off. Shows how tech-oriented my mind is :v:
