How do I disable my microphone recording the sounds on my computer?

I'm using a Creative X-Fi headset, and it's working fine all but for the fact that it records the sounds of everything I do on my computer. People who hear me talk on my microphone will also hear the youtube videos I look at, the message alerts on steam, and the in game music and sounds of my games.

My friend suggested turning off stereo mix, as that's usually the problem.
However I didn't have the panel he was used to, so I'll have to disable it elsewhere...

When I google "how to disable stereo mix on vista", all I get results for is "how to enable stereo mix on vista".

Is it USB or do you plug into your onboard sound card?
