Figures it's the worst of the classics (in my own humble opinion)
I find any of the pre-Contracts games hard to play.

What are you saying?
It's the best for me. Best story of all hitman games.

Disguises are straight up broken in SA. You could be slowly casually walking a good distance away from a guard while wearing a disguise and they will still just randomly see through it for absolutely no reason.

Codename is worse imo
Codename's controls are wonky, the disguise system is pretty shitty. Silent Assassin had better controls, higher resolution. Several of the missions may be total bullshit but I loved the story and level design. Contracts was pretty fucking good though, I'm surprised they didn't give it away since it's the forgotten one.

I couldn't tell. I have only played the one with Absolutely gorgeous graphics.
Blood Money is the best.
If we are comparing and stuff, I would like to simply say that up to Blood Money Hitman series got better and better in every new entry. In Codename 47 they still didn't figure out what kind of game they wanted to make (there was no ranking system, and there were few missions that weren't stealth at all). In SA they figured it all out, but it had some issues with limited AI and stuff, and with Contracts and Blood money they improved the basic concepts of SA giving the player even more freedom and choices. I haven't played Absolution and can't comment.
absolution is ok but not a good hitman game

The worst kind
The main reason I dislike H2 is because the AI is too unforgiving. Disguises are so impractical you have to walk on eggshells around guards and even then they are liable to shoot you in the face for really no reason at all.
It's really shitty for the player feedback-wise, when you're seemingly doing nothing wrong and suddenly your cover is blown and you have to restart.
I've never completed it once over the years because I couldn't stand it. I've completed maybe the first mission.
I've completed the other games numerous times though. That's why I think it's the worst one, because I've had the worst time with it.
No doubt it has the most interesting story out of the classics though.

Controls leave much to be desired and all that but I still had a blast in Traditions of the Trade as a kid

Agreed; each Hitman game has improved upon the last. Hitman 2 is playable today, but you really have to keep the wonky "Kill everything that looks at me wrong" ai in mind and the experience is hampered a bit. I would still recommend it though, because of some clever set ups.
Hitman Absolution isn't even a Hitman game.

i am fairly certain that contracts can never be sold again because of some licensing issues with music used in the game

It's been on steam for a couple years, it just sorta reappeared without notice one day
Couldn't get past the first mission without crashing though

I think it was the track playing in the biker bar in Rotterdam, as far as I know that's been changed now so it's being sold again
