They do look really cool, but how will we know it's what we expect? They can't really show videos of what it looks like inside. The thing Nintendo (I think it was them) released was shit and gave you head aches.

That was also almost 20 years ago.
Those look awesome to use for ArmA.
Keep in mind you're looking at 640x800 for each eye. That's like YT video resolution. Don't expect HD quality with it.
I would really like to see them get a same size screen with 1080p.
Watched the panel with Carmack, Abrash and the Oculus guy. Proceeded to go for the $300 tier on their Kickstarter so I can get a dev kit. It's one of those things that can explode into a new market full of opportunities and I'm going to try to be a part of it.

1280x800 with half the pixels aimed at your left eye, and the other half at your right. You still have the same 16:10 screen surface. Not too shabby, plus they're trying to up the resolution even further for the consumer version.
I can finally watch porn everywhere without anyone knowing

The thing about looking around corners and touching the floor, maybe you could combine this with a Kinect?

This was mentioned in the other thread and should be mentioned here. The screens within the headset are so small that the resolution will still appear to be very high, in a way similar to how most of your phones' resolutions are around 480x800, and don't look like shit. It's all about the dpi, and with the size of the screens, it should look pretty damn nice.
Besides, consumer version will have better screens.

You better invest in some of those really thick jeans then.

Carmack said that kinect has so much latency its useless.
The glasses sound a lot like the old Forte VFX1. It's nice to see a modern version of the same idea. I'll probably buy it as well when it comes out.
I wonder if someone will make a VirtualBoy emulator for these.

Would still show off precision etc. Plus you could synchronize it with webcam vid of dude moving his head around.

It would have to include instructions on how to make a table stand for it.
I Can't wait for it!

The way I understood it is the screen is basically split in half, so you get the left half displaying the image for the left eye and the right half displaying a slightly offset image for the right eye. You're effectively getting half the resolution of the screen to look at, and it won't be a 16:10 ratio.

You do know there's this thing called perspective, right? Objects closer to you appear bigger and so on...
You usually don't look at a phone screen from as close as the Oculus Rift screen will be to your eye. Holding a phone in your hands half a meter from your head is like looking at a computer monitor a few metres from you, of course that won't look bad.
The goggles look awesome and I think it sounds like it could be very immersive for video games, but wouldn't staring at these screens so close to your eyes be really bad for your eyes? I know monitors in general aren't healthy to look at for long periods of time: but wouldn't these be like a lot more strain on your eyes?

They would just have to include a "Take regular breaks" warning that nobody will read.
First thing people will do with these is play Mario or Quake.
