Long story short, I'm going camping for a week the day after tomorrow, the only gadget I have a car charger for is my EeePC, which iTunes refuses to work on because a) iTunes is a heap of shit and b) I nlited the fuck out of my Eee's XP installation. Will it still charge though, regardless of me not having itunes or the apple mobile device drivers installed?
Yeah it should

USB will be supplying power to the device no matter what it is.
Well I can't access iTunes on my computer, charging works fine for me.

Yeah, I thought it should, but you can never know with Apple. I'll plug 'er in for a while and see what happens.
AFAIK there is drivers involved

Yeah, I left it plugged in overnight and the charge actually went down.
As long as something from apple is installed (as in the bonjour service) it should charge.
Bonjour service is networking I believe

USB supplies power of 100 mA all the time (not sure about the exact values here). Once the device is recognized, the computer gets the device data returned, and, if needed, supplies more current.
Try this:

Fuck yes, I plugged in my pod while in the device manager and I found 'Apple Mobile Device USB driver' which had a little exclamation mark next to it. Telling windows to update the driver gave me a working version, and my iPod now charges. Only problem now is that I need to remove all the fucking temporary files and shit that iTunes left on my tiny hard drive, reducing my free space to about 15mb, the bloated piece of shit.
My iPod charges on a lot of things with USB ports, even my Xbox.
I'd recommend you go pick up a mains to USB converter. They're very useful with iPods.
