That actually sounds properly next generation to me. Minecraft style earth exploration? Persistent world? I can dig it.

heh
So could a really dedicated clan just go around tear apart quest giver locations to stop them from spawning? Article does imply certain NPCs only spawn near certain biomes, so I guess there's plenty of safe zones/cities around, which would limit the concept quite a bit considering the importance of this location is what would make them fun to destroy.
I wonder when we'll see a proper MMO that's completely player-driven and organic thus wouldn't have to think of NPCs. Maybe even would have a drop pod spawn system so it doesn't need fixed player spawn locations either.
Something like Eve's null sec I guess. Sounds super scary to develop, but to me it's exactly the kind of game that would only properly work as an MMO and could become a massive time sink.
what if players just dig a giant trench around the safe zones
dynamic systems = potential for hilarious exploitation = incredible fun
but after a few weeks won't everywhere be blown to absolute shit

I'm getting Red Faction flashbacks
but after a few weeks won't everywhere be blown to absolute shit
And don't forget all of the dick and swastika trenches everywhere :v:
i can smell the ashes already, who's up to blow up the world via a super volcano or summon a giant fucking elemental?
I believe most places in world regenerate after a while.
Also that tree smashing in the video doesn't look that good, looks like they just spawned random tree debris roughly around where the tree was.
Yeah I remember the last 50 times an MMO was supposed to have even just free housing placement for players. Fully destructible environments? Suuuureeeee.

I mean they have video as proof so you cant really dispute or doubt that

I've seen plenty of pre-release media that showed entire features that ended up missing in final games. Sure there will be destructible environments, but that they are more than just a few preset things I'll believe when I play it.
Mind you if it is that's great, but I've been getting hyped over MMOs since 1999 and none have delivered even half the hype, so I'm not exactly optimistic about it.

they're basing their entire gameplay off the Voxel Farm engine, it's not just "a feature we might work on if we figure it out and get enough", it's a full fledged voxel based destruction/creation engine with tons of man hours put in, made by someone outside the studio, licensed by SOE, so it's already in the game, and the game is being built on top of it
I wonder if it will be like Ultima Online having an realistic eco system.
Everything getting fucked up in a mater of days.
Won't there probably be spells for deep pits? Anyone could see a newbie and dig him way down into the ground, forcing him to die to high level enemies.

There won't be any character levels here, which is seriously cool by itself
and besides, you're probably not gonna find eldritch abominations sleeping everywhere under the surface
This sounds pretty damn cool. I'll probably give ESO a pass and play this instead once it comes out.
So, the tools designed for datamining planetside 2 should work for this, due to them both being on forgelight, might be interesting to dig through that and see what they have in store.
