• XFX 6970 2GB not performing well enough?

So I recently bought the parts for my new PC and put it together without any problems. It started up fine on the first try too. So for the only game I've tested it on is Call of Duty 2 which is quite an old game but I frequently play it. Here are my specs: Furmark has given me: with these settings: and Unigine: So the problem is, my friend with these specs: Gets around the same or BETTER benchmarks than me. In Call of Duty 2 I get around 500 FPS constant with DX7. He gets 1000 FPS constant. With DX9 I get between 130-250 FPS on max settings with 1680 x 1050 and he gets 500 - 600 FPS. This may have something to do with CoD2 being an old game. But the furmark and unigine tests show that it isn't the game. So FP, what do?
Cheating you with resolution maybe? Can be other factors
We both used the exact same settings for the benchmarks. Including resolution. He gets the exact same results as I do. I agree that he uses a smaller res when he plays CoD2 but I've tried lowering my res to below his and I still get the same or worse results.
benchmark with a newer game, either way nobody cares about that difference. "wow this lags im only playing at 150fps omg help"
Yeah I don't mind playing with the FPS I am currently getting. But knowing that I'm not getting the most out of it is annoying me. I want to know the reason behind it.
old drivers? power supply not enough? can be a lot.
850W power supply. Latest drivers.
Does Speccy always pickup memory being in dual channel? Better question, are you running dual channel? You should be, just want to check
Yes, I am.
Your core clock seems to be lower than the normal one, uit should be around 350 higer than the one furmark reads. [editline]13th April 2011[/editline] Try downloading MSI afterburner, and overclock from there.
I have no idea how it turned out like that in the screen shot so I took another one:
Core clock is quite low. I have (I think) 850 MHz with my 5870.
That is truly weird.
Well then there should be nothing wrong as far as I can tell.
There has got to be something wrong. Every benchmark I've run, my friend gets better results than me. [editline]13th April 2011[/editline] Using Furmark once more, the clock keeps between: 598MHz and 700MHz
I get ~10 fps more than you do on the same settings, which is strange, but you should be beating that 5770/50 anyway. I'm a 6950.
That is odd
How does it perform in a newer game compared to his card, have you tested one besides CoD2 yet?
Not yet. I'm a little busy with other things at the moment, but I'll install Crysis 2 when I can.
If the 6970 core clock is lower than the 5770 then that is the problem.
I'm getting a good 45-70 FPS in Crysis 2. GPU temp went up to 90 degrees c though. [editline]13th April 2011[/editline] Forgot to mention that he gets around the same FPS as me in Crysis 2.
I don't know which model you have exactly, but based on your tests it seems to run 200mhz to 300mhz under the specifications of an average 6970 2gb. If I was in your position I would either open a ticket with the manufacturer, or slowly over clock + stress test it until it's up where it should be. Probably opening a ticket before over clocking, seeing as it already seems to run pretty hot where it's at.
Thanks, I've submitted a ticket. Now I'll just have to wait for a reply I guess. Thanks for the help guys. Although, if you guys still have any help you can give me, then it's more than welcomed.
While waiting for a proper response from XFX, I've been looking for other peoples results of Unigine. Looking here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1634430 , two people with the same PC are getting roughly the same results as I am. 1981 – i5-2500K(4.5GHz), 2GB VTX3D HD6950>6970(940/1450) and 2020 – i5-2500K (4.5Ghz), 2GB VTX3D HD6950>6970(970/1450) I'm getting: 1914 - i5-2500K(3.4GHz), 2GB XTX HD6970(880/1375) Notice my CPU frequency is lower, and so are my GPU clocks. This benchmark was done with default settings at 1024 x 768. I played a little more Crysis 2 and the temps went up to 90 degrees while at 880 / 1375. Is everything actually fine?
You shouldn't be reaching that temperature at all, try using MSI Afterburner to regulate the speed of your fan. Also, what case are you using? Mines very small, and my card doesn't break 75 even when overclocked.
NZXT Phantom. I've tried putting the fan controls on the top of the case to lowest, half way, and full. Not much of a difference. When playing games, my GPUs fan seems to not go over 30%. I'll try using MSI Afterburner. [editline]14th April 2011[/editline] So, I used MSI Afterburner and got these results with Furmark:
Downgrade to 11.3. [editline]14th April 2011[/editline] Also update Windows 7 to service pack 1.
I'll update to Service Pack 1 soon. Would downgrading to 11.3 be such a good idea? Upgrading to 11.4 actually made it perform better.
According to a Google search it's a preview driver so pretty much if you have an issue you need to go back to one that's more proven to work but I didn't know you've already tried that version. And updating to service pack 1 probably won't fix it you just should for other reasons.
I think the card seems to be running fine right now, compared to other peoples benchmark scores. The temperature is the only worrying thing, but I've been lurking other forums and people have been saying that it's quite common in the 6950/6970.
