My friend has been asking me questions about replacing his laptop, and I've suddenly realized I know jack shit about laptops. He needs something that can play recent games (year-old) reasonably well. Portability and battery life are basically a non-issue; if he didn't move between houses every week, I'd be telling him how to build a desktop.
So, this laptop needs to have a medium screen size (bigger than a 13.3", smaller than a 17") and needs to be powerful enough to run new-ish games at a reasonable framerate. Budget is $1,000 USD.
You might check Asus's website, they make some really nice gaming laptops.
Given your budget is $1,000; you'll find something nice.
here's two good ones:

Will give you much more power in budget (the 630M is really quite naff, and the 640M is better, but not as future proof.
Also those have 1366X768 displays, which is terrible at 15.6 Inch.

I've tried. I can't make sense of Asus's models and versions of models and revisions of versions. Makes my head hurt.

That's quite the laptop, and there are a lot of options, but I've never actually heard of Sager.

They are a reseller of a company called Clevo (They buy the empty chassis from Clevo, and then install the components you specify). Clevo is a very good company, and have probably made at least one laptop you have used in the past.
I have the exact same laptop, but being in England I used a retailer called PC Specialist instead.
The build quality on this thing is amazing. They keyboard and trackpad work really well, and even though you said battery life didn't matter, I get 3ish hours with the NVIDIA Optimus.
The exact model of computer is Clevo W150ER, if you google that you will find out a fair bit about it.
I can't tell you anything about Xotic PC/Sager as a company, but I can say the laptop itsself is of a very high standard.
I opted for the upgraded thermal paste, however the it should be cool enough without it.
So at this point I'm assuming the Sager is the best option. Unless anyone has a different opinion?

I've had a Sager for about a year. The performance I get is surprisingly good and I love it. (50 fps playing Metro 2033 on High at 1360x768)
Mine was $1500 and costs more than your price point, but with how helpful their support is in case something stops working I'd say Sager is a good place to buy.
Cool. Sager it is then.

GT 660M, high res display, cheaper than 1000
On sale, yeah. I know Lenovos get great reviews, but I don't know anything about the company outside of the Thinkpads, and under $1,000 includes a 1366x768 screen instead of 1920x1080.

The $999.20 option is 1920x1080. If you only rely on personal experience when purchasing something knew, especially if the products get great reviews, how do you expect to branch out?
Well, the sale ends in half an hour anyway. By the time he's back online it'll be way too far out of his price range.

Lenovo sales have a funny way of lasting longer than they say they will...

The 650M and 660M are exactly the same card. You can overclock the 650M to the same performance of the 660M with MSI Afterburner for about 1-2 degrees c increase in heat.
The sager also supports two hard drives, meaning if you wanted to put a SSD in at a later date, you could without loosing the normal drive.
The screen is 1920x1080 by default.
Also, from the pictures it looks like the lenovo has a clickpad rather than a trackpad with dedicated buttons. Might not bother you, but it would bother me.
He uses a USB mouse so it probably won't matter.
On the Sager you recommended, if you choose two hard drives, does that mean you can't have an DVDRW?
Looks like it.

No, it has two hard drive slots and a dvd drive slot.
The higher up model with the 670/675/680 can only hold one, but the w150er can hold two.
I have a Crucial M4, 320gig HDD, and DVDRW in it.
Not a photo of mine, but you can clearly see the two proper HDD bays:

Yeah, I completely misread the options before.
