So the theory is that you can encode extra data in the spin of light photons. Depending on how accurately you can measure this 'spin' you could encode a lot more data. I don't quite understand what the controversy is about though; is it that the experiments they did weren't actually using the photon spin to encode information or was the technique already in use in a different way?
