• Post Your Server/Rack/Collection setup!

It appears that many FP user's run servers either for others, or for themselves. Since I find it interested to look at servers, I thought I would create this thread! When posting your server, try if possible to include spec's, model, use etc, just to make it interesting. I have now 2 servers, one in an office I maintain, which handles fax, backups and is a file server, am going in tomorrow so I'll grab pic's then. The other is sitting in a box in front of me fresh from eBay, going to use it as a home domain server, just to make things a bit easier. I'll get some unboxing and setup pic's soon :) Anyone up for posting first?
I should technically have three full racks of gear. One consisting of an HP-9000 (single proc, 512mb ram, HP-UX), another with an SGI Origin 2000 (8 x 120mhz MIPS R10000, 8gb ram, Irix 6.5.30) and a third consisting of an IBM 7552 (80286 + 80287, 3mb ram, DOS 5) with dual 9-track tape drives with various 1-4U accessories in between (notably A/V break-out boxes). Unfortunately 80% of all the above gear is still in storage. Edit: And I don't have racks. I just have them all stacked on top of eachother. Edite, again: Otherwise, my camera server, FTP, VPN, media, HTTP, and Appletalk file management is done off my HP Proliant ML370.
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/IMAG00563.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/IMAG00571.jpg[/img_thumb] -Snap server 4000 NAS. -Dell power-edge 350 - Camera system host. Both are soon to be mounted on the rack next to it as soon as i get this cat5 run.
Well, as I said I would earlier, here is the unboxing of my 'new' server. Fucking hell they put a lot of packing cardboard in there.. Anyway, I have bought one for now, will order another 2. This one will be (when installed) a SBS 2003 DC, File Server, Exchange server. The second will become an Astaro server. The third - possibly a game server, if not, just a spare. I have set up RAID 0 using 2 160GB (I know..) HDD's, as you can see, is now installing. Hmm... big box.. [img_thumb]http://localhostr.com/files/0gYACMV/WP_000013.jpg[/img_thumb] What we got here? [img_thumb]http://localhostr.com/files/UrmbpSm/WP_000014.jpg[/img_thumb] Too...much....packaging.. [img_thumb]http://localhostr.com/files/DBzQGlY/WP_000015.jpg[/img_thumb] Tada! [img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14575796/IMG_20101113_171829.jpg[/img_thumb] Its in my closet. Its a Dell Dimension 4600 (P4 2.53 Ghz, 512 MB RAM) from a friend who didn't want it anymore. Its replacing the Compaq Deskpro 6333 (PII 333 Mhz, 384 MB RAM) on the left for file server purposes. Mainly because it runs quieter (its near silent). It has a 80 GB internal drive, along with a 500 GB external drive. I also have a Dimension 2400 (the case is identical to the 4600) under my bed, but its gutted for the most part. The power supply from it went into the 4600, because the original power supply would give you a nasty shock if you touched anything metal on the PC. It would even go through USB cables.
I want to buy an old poweredge, Xserve and an IBM or HP server, UPS, switch and a good case. Have Windows Server on the poweredge, Mac OS Server on the Xserve and CentOS on the IBM/HP. Have shitloads of storage in the Windows server and use it for backups, use the Mac server for time machine and docking around, and CentOS for Minecraft/learning. All in my perfect world, would only cost about £300 since I'd buy used servers.
I use an old Packard Bell media center as a server. 2x80GB IDE Sempron 3000+ 2x1GB RAM 25/25Mbit internet Gets the job done, with web hosting and a minecraft server. Can't post a picture as it stands well hidden in my mom's house, in the other end of the country. [sp]Without her knowing[/sp] :ninja:
The silver case is my fileserver with a six disk RAID5 (2.2TB capacity). The rest are various Compaq Proliant servers I occasionally use as a bit of a Windows server sandbox. The big black thing under the switches is a DLT VS80 autoloading tape drive with an 8 tape capacity (640GB), like the Proliant servers I just use it as a bit of a play thing though occasionally I'll use it for backup if I need to store a hard disk image somewhere. First home server, trying Windows Server 2008 R2 on it. [img]http://nikomo.eu/servut/1.jpg[/img] Second one, has latest Debian on it but it's not connected to the switch at the moment. [img]http://nikomo.eu/servut/2.jpg[/img] Netbook I'm going to install Ubuntu Server on, setup SAMBA so I can use that juicy 250GB of space. [img]http://nikomo.eu/servut/3.jpg[/img] Fourth one, it's some old HP piece of crap, has Windows 7 right now on it, planned on using it for media but I'm going to get cables for it and use it as a server instead. [img]http://nikomo.eu/servut/4.jpg[/img] Fifth is my VPS in Germany. The images you just viewed are hosted on it. Which means they'll probably be gone in a week since I reinstall the OS like mad.
[QUOTE=M2k3;26042404]ohlook.jpg[/QUOTE] Heyyyy. I remember those Proliant cases. I remember when I still used a 1600.

[img]http://yumyumbublegum.mine.nu/pics/S3010036.JPG[/img] HP DL380 G3 Two (2) Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz processors 1GB of ram I also have another server, a E5200, 4GB of ram, 250GB of hdd space in an antec 300 case.

Alright, I took delivery of my server on Friday, it's a Compaq Proliant DL360 G2. I have no idea as of yet what to do with it but I was thinking of a website or maybe a Minecraft server. The problem is I have no idea how to set it up as I'm completely new to this. I whacked Server 2003 on there to check it was all in working order but I'l probably try out linux in the near future. Anyway, the specs are; Dual PIII 1.4ghz 3gb Pc133 mhz ram 18gb 10,000rpm hard drive Obligatory pictures: [IMG_thumb]http://imgur.com/YM5zw.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://imgur.com/t8L8j.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://imgur.com/8qRnn.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://imgur.com/4emmz.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://imgur.com/AxmUq.jpg[/IMG_thumb] One problem, I dont think my internet is up to hosting a minecraft server, would it cope with some light webhosting though? You could probably get 3-4 users through the Internet connection. Even then it would be unstable.
[QUOTE=nikomo;26052011]EeePC 1005HA[/QUOTE] That's the one. [editline]14th November 2010[/editline] If you want to upgrade the HDD you need to do a near on full teardown
My sorry excuse of a Rack [img_thumb]http://www.wuala.com/api/preview/Mingeinabag/LOL/Server/up%20to%20date%20pics/1.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.wuala.com/api/preview/Mingeinabag/LOL/Server/up%20to%20date%20pics/2.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.wuala.com/api/preview/Mingeinabag/LOL/Server/up%20to%20date%20pics/3.jpg[/img_thumb] The laptop's original GFX cooler weren't capable of cooling the 8600GT, even when only using it for desktop tasks, so I ripped off the keyboard and original fan, glued & duct-taped a spare 120mm fan in place over the cpu, northbridge, southbridge and GFX and covered off the rest of the space the keyboard used to occupy with a piece of white cardboard. The fan is powered by the stationary with a jury rigged Molex cable, and so is the WRT54G hiding behind the Laptop the stationary laying down is a case i got from my brother for freebie, along with a 450watt Chieftec power supply, the pimp fans, a 200GB S-ata HDD and a E8500 Core2Duo. Sexy Specs: Laptop Trashed Zepto Znote 6224W 2ghz Core2duo I don't remember the model number off. 2 GigaByte of ram. 200 Gigabyte S-ata hdd. Missing keyboard. Uprated cooling fan. Running a stripped down Xubuntu 10.04 X64 installation, with only the GUI parts and other necessary things left, since I'm a idiot with a Linux Terminal. Sporting both VNC, SSH and hamachi Linux for connecting, and being used for Minecraft Server, OpenTTD server, and GMod Linux test server. Sexy stationary with pimp fans. Gigabyte something, something motherboard E8500 Core2Duo running at stock speed (3.16 GHZ) 4 gigabyte of ram 200GB S-ata HDD for OS and gameserver use, and 4, 1.5TeraByte HDD's running in ZFS Raid via FUSE (I know, I know shame on me, but I've benchmarked and tested it, and it's stable as fuck) for 4 TeraByte of useable networked storage via Samba. 4 80mm pimp fans at the front, and 2 at the back. Same as the Laptop, for controlling and connecting, runs a couple of GMod servers and Samba for file storing & sharing. The router's a Linksys WRT54G V1.1 with DD-wrt, used purely as a wireless bridge between another router on the other side of the wall, haven't been arsed to drill a hole for a LAN cable, since i don't have the build plans for the house yet.
For some reason the idea of running a server in my room seems really cool. I get just over 1megabit upload so I might be able to do a small gaming server. I have an old P4 2.54ghz, 1gb ram, 80gb computer that my parents upgraded from, I could backup the drive, give to them, put I guess linux on it for a low power server. Would Ubuntu work for server operations? Don't they have a server edition? How does it compare to the desktop edition.

That's bloody nice, Signature.
Seriously?! Thats fucking awesome man. Mind taking a pic of the full cell tower? Is it fully functional? hell, what I would give to do that. Going to start a thread when you start working on it?

I can get a SSID to broadcast up to 3-5 Kilometers, but packet loss is about 20 unobstructed and up to 60-70 in a building. No point in waisting everyones time just to find out if it will fail, you know?
Your not in America, are you Sig?

Wait, you just have an abandoned cell tower next to your house? And you can pump WiFi through it? That's so awesome.
