So whats the most future proof motherboard around currently?? I'm talking something with 7 pci-e slots, loads of DIMMs or something. This looks pretty hardcore: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176008
But yeh im looking for a motherboard that will last for a decade, where if i ever seem to experience a performance issue i can have the option to add an additional component. Not just something that you sort by highest price too. Make sure its worth the money ;D
Don't bother.
Even the most high-end of parts only last 5 years, tops.
Your better off just buying a high end mobo now and buying another one in 3-5 years

Maybe a decade was abit too far then, but i am looking for something that will last definatly many years.

Why would you want 7 pci-e?
For 7 graphic robots at once 7 way SLI!!!!
The motherboard has to be the shortest lived computer component. You can't future proof a motherboard because new sockets are coming out all the time.

and stuff like USB 3 and SATA
speaking of which, whatever happened to that light peak thing intel was doing
I usually roll on the intel side but ATI has been doing a good job keeping their processor sockets compatible with the whole AM2, AM3, AM3+ thing.

AMD, thank you everybody.

amd
amd
Same brand, different box.
Same brand, different box.
ATi can be called AMD but AMD can't be called ATi

what?
what?
AMD owns ATi, not the other way around.
what?
It's like rectangles. You can call a square a rectangle, but you can't call a rectangle a square.
Futureproofing doesn't exist.

wrong? what
If you want a kickass highend one, go for http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=170-BL-E762-A1&family=Motherboard%20Family&series=Intel%20X58%20Series%20Family&sw=5

Rated dumb, since he's right.

heh
There's no such thing as a future proof computer realy. ^^ 3-5 Years tops, or more if you don't use your pc for much. AMD are probably your best bet though, they tend to re-use older ports or atleast make things backwards compatible, gives you a few extra years over intel who tend to drop and move on with things.
Also AMD are ATI, ATI are AMD... you only have to visit the site to see that?
Get a decent 890 chipset AMD board - any Intel motherboard you buy now is a dead end in terms of socket support.

You do realize you're wrong right?

Good.

Or this

The keys to having a motherboard last forever are this:
Find the right BIOS, and NEVER upgrade your bios until it becomes necessary.
If your motherboard box contains the words "NFX00", where X = a number, you can count on it likely dieing much sooner that it would otherwise. nVidia makes some amazing cards, but their southbridge chips just plain work brilliantly or fucking explode and there is no in-between.
Buy EVGA Enterprise or Gigabyte or Tyan, and do not overclock, period.
Leave your damn system alone, and turn it off when you're not using it.
Clean off the dust with an actual air compressor.
Unplug it in crappy weather. (see nforce chipset comment above)
You get what you pay for.
EVGA Classified and Tyan Mil-grade are a good place to start.

I do belive when there's more than 4 involved it's an orgy.
He wants a mobo capable of a graphics orgy.

Anywho, I'dd say don't bother. Nothing lasts high end for more than about 5 years
