They didn't nuke Tokyo for a reason, they wanted someone to Surrender.
In reality the number of viable targets for nuclear strike were few. They could possibly bomb a city or two on the Southern tip of the Japanese Islands but they couldn't bomb Tokyo for example and they couldn't bomb Kyoto or Osaka either because they're temple cities. Which would be like nuking the Vatican and telling the Italian Christians you respect their culture.
In all honesty, even after the two first bombings the targets were basically gone. There was mass evacuations of people from cities and in addition POW's were moved into them as hostages. As if that wasn't enough there really wasn't any point as all Japanese cities at this point has been fire-bombed or just bombed into pulp making them all effectively useless as a industrial complex.

I was at home playing Left 4 Dead 2 Tank Rush mode. Then I heard that on Sky News that they dropped an atomic bomb in Vietnam or something I think. I thought, "Sweet, I guess we won the war in Vietnam. Those crazy bastards."
Then I realized it was Sky News and I continued with my game of L4D2.
Probably the necessary molecules needed to create a sperm cell scattered separately somewhere in the world that would soon form some kind of edible substance my father would consume after he is born from my grandfather who would also eat similar nutrients needed to make another sperm cell; my father. A mainland invasion would've nonetheless be massively bloody.
