MOBA was a term coined by Riot; who made League of Legends. A more universal term is ARTS (Action Real Time Strategy).

WoW had battle arenas, and it was an MMORPG.
Neither LoL nor Dota2 involves a battle arena more than a battlefield, with bases, cliffs, and rivers etc. I hate Riot.

Also wait this is a bit wrong to argue about acronyms (ARTS all the way) over this piece of news which I also found a bit.. concerning? A lot of people didn't seem to take eSport's big appearance with Dota2 on ESPN2 so good.
