Now, for the past maybe 6 months I've been really low on disk space (between 9-25 gigs) and I've always managed to stay above the single-digits - but after I got done playing Gmod today, I went to My Computer to open a network drive when I noticed I was at an astonishing 5 gigs left, even though I had 10 left right before playing.
The weird thing is that I'm not even downloading anything. I'm running Firefox and Steam and that's it.
So I deleted a few things and moved a big 1gb folder over to a networked computer and noticed that my disk space went up to 6.75. OK. So, I refreshed and it was back down to 6.3.
I noticed that CSS was downloading a gigantic-ass 1 gb update so I canceled it and deleted CSS entirely. Disk space went up dramatically to 8 gigs but it is still steadily going down. Every about 30 secs-minute my disk space decreases by about .1 of a gig, and I don't know how to stop it. I've ran Disk Cleanup multiple times to delete crap and remove restore points, but nothing seems to be working. My disk space jumps up a little bit but just decreases more.
I've been checking my resource monitor and System is writing at about 1 mb/minute. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I'm moving a 2gb file over to another computer. System was earlier writing at about 20 mb/min but I don't know what the hell was causing it.
Specs:
Model: Dell Inspiron 1545
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit
RAM: 3 gb
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core 2 ghz
Hard disk capacity: 134 gb
Please guys, help my poor laptop, I don't want to reformat or anything.
I've googled this issue multiple times and couldn't find a working solution.
Yeah same here brother, I got 138gb left, it's a dell too.
I find that steam is hogging 40gb of the hard-drive and I had to get rid of mw2 to have visual studio put in.
With the weird thing, not what you quite think. If you haven't done your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly cache clean-out than it will store a bum load of files
MY SUGGESTIONS:
atf cleaner.exe <-- great program it's free too.
or just upgrade it
Okay, I put my computer on sleep and went to go see the fireworks, I came back and found it sitting steadily at 9.27 gigs. I opened Firefox and it jumped down to 9.10 gigs.
I'd like an explanation as to where the hell all my space is going. There has to be some way to find this out.
Edit: It's cut the crap now but I'd like to know what the hell I can do next time this happens.
My netbook did this with 7 too, as did Vista on my PC. They both just chewed through my hard drive until it was running out of space. It was worse on my netbook too since it only had a 4GB SSD anyway.
It's creating system restore points/shadow copies. Follow this guide to limit how much space it can use.
You can also move your temp directories to a bigger HDD.
Right-click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab > Environment variables. Highlight the "temp" variable, click Edit, and enter the new location in the Variable Value field.

I don't have another HDD. :c
Try out Process Monitor (an official Microsoft tool).
It will tell you almost everything that your computer is doing at all times. You should be able to make a filter that blocks out everything except for file system stuff. From that you should be able to determine which programs are writing to your HDD.

As for this, I think it has to do with the way Windows manages your computer's memory. Basically Windows needs to allocate some memory for every running program and it tries to allocate most of that in your RAM because it's fast. However if you have enough programs open, your RAM can get used up. Rather than just running out of memory and crashing your computer, Windows starts using your HDD for extra memory.
Some people think that's annoying and try to change it, but it's really for the best. Disabling that feature might give you more HDD space, but your computer will probably become extremely unstable. A better solution would be to buy more RAM.

You said you ran disk cleanup which, alone, doesn't delete system restore points and definitely will not solve the issue of your disk space constantly decreasing.
If you're not willing to try different possible solutions don't post a thread in the first place.

Superfetch doesn't make your page file bigger silly

Thanks, I'll try this next time.
