• Mac to PC file sharing

Hello, I just got a MacBook Pro for college and I managed to set it up to access the shared files on my desktop. The problem is, even though I can see it on my desktop I can't access the Mac. I went through a lot of tutorials but I can't seem to get it to work. The Homegroup is up on my PC and the mac is set to the same group in network settings. The Mac has windows sharing on and the security is set to allow file sharing. Any kind of help is appreciated.
File sharing can be a pain. Easier to set up a dropbox account and then install the dropbox program on the two pcs
I'm not sure how you would do it in OS X, but could you not set up a shared folder over the network and use that as a hub?
Well I can already do that since the Mac can connect to my PC's shared files, I just want to be able to connect to it from this computer. I'd rather just have full access on both computers, it's much less of a hassle.
So the PC is having issues connecting to the Mac? Apple > System Preferences > Sharing > Options > "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" and also be sure to tick your username so your PC can use your login to gain full access to your computer.
just use smb it's not hard [editline]4th January 2012[/editline] in fact finder auto-detects smb hosts on the same network for you
The SMB was enabled, when ever I try and tick my username the password says that it's invalid.
File sharing is a pain between Macs and PCs. If I were you I would just admit defeat and use dropbox. I've never gotten SMB shares to work reliably for me
Mac's are PC's so I would assume connecting another mac to a mac is easy?
The SMB was enabled, when ever I try and tick my username the password says that it's invalid.
It's the login/admin password for your computer. If it's not working, you'll need to reset it from the install disc (snow leopard) or the recovery partition (lion).
File sharing is a pain between Macs and PCs. Being trained in the area, I still wanted to pull my hair out. On Lion though, that shit's dreamy. It'll auto-populate in Finder's sidebar and actually work if the other computer is Windows 7.
Ok, so what I was looking at was a Sharing account, not associated with my PC and has been re-named to avoid confusion. But even after resetting the password it still just says Incorrect password. Once again, the WINS settings in network are set to the same workgroup as my PC. You've got your user ticked anyway, that's all that matters on the Mac side.
You don't (and probably shouldn't unless you have a specific need) need to be messing around with the workgroup, homegroup (Which OS X doesn't even support) and WINS stuff. That said, the SMB support in (Snow) Leopard won't work with Vista/7 hosts, due to Microsoft requiring stricter security, either upgrade to Lion or follow these instructions: http://macs.about.com/od/macwindows/ss/sharemacfilesvs_8.htm
My Mac is running Lion 10.7.2, the tutorial that you linked didn't work either. The error I keep getting is "The network path was not found" with an error code of 0x80070035. I haven't had any luck looking up the code, it all seems to circle back to the same things for me.
