Keylogging a startup password (Bios) with a hardware keylogger
41 replies, posted
To cut a long story short I have fallen out with my dad. My PC is downstairs and he has passworded it. It is a startup password and until you have entered it you cannot even see the bios screen. It is a complete lock out in every way. Last time he "Banned" me from MY OWN PC it lasted 5 months and also resulted in him taking my netbook when i was at school and hiding it (I now have that back and am on it now). However I want to play some games other than ace of spades and 1nsane and other old or not demanding games (I recently bought he new Il-2 before he banned me). Is there any way of bypassing this password (Not removing it because then he would know). So far the only theory I can think of is to use this. It is a usb keyboard and I wanted to know if a hardware logger would work for a bios password.
Thanks in advance, Banjo.
PS: When i say bios password i do not mean the kind you enter to change boot settings etc. I mean a screen that comes up as soon as your press the on button (Before anything loads) and will not even get pass that screen unless you enter a password.
Hope you can help all :S
PPS: Hope this is the right section.

PS: Dont think i made this link clear enough http://www.cbitsltd.net/product_ITS_LM-LM933/KEYLOGGER_USB_KEYSAFE_PRO_2MB.htm
i dunno i would probably try doing a software BIOS flash even though i heavily DO NOT recommend it
I cannot let him know im in. I have to either get the pass or bypass it without removing it
drain the CMOS battery?

sort of legit excuse
[editline]3rd May 2011[/editline]
there are also generic manufacturer passwords that can sometimes bypass the password prompt regardless of whatever is on there

Note that the key associated to "_" in the US keyboard corresponds to "?" in some European keyboards (such as Italian and German ones), so -- for example -- you should type AWARD?SW when using those keyboards. Also remember that passwords are Case Sensitive.
Take out the CMOS battery.

Aurora93 i have already gone through lists of them with no luck :(
you seriously cannot open that fucker, take out the battery, and leave it out for about an hour

My main question was if a hardware keylogger would work (LIke this one http://www.cbitsltd.net/product_ITS_LM-LM933/KEYLOGGER_USB_KEYSAFE_PRO_2MB.htm) Or would it not due to it being so early on in the boot
I finally remembered what the name of this utility I heard once, it's called CmosPwd, turns out it was made by the same guys who made TeskDisk
Sadly that will not work for me. The password is before the bios messages come up. It is the first screen you see when you switch it on. Without the password the computer is dead weight. There is nothing you can do. After 3 tryes you have to reboot as well :/
That IS the BIOS password, goddamnit.
At least TRY the software.

It takes a couple of seconds to reset the password, not a few hours.

Different passwords can be set for BIOS and Acces.
He could replace the CR2032 battery with a dead, or near dead one (or even drain the current one.) The machine will start up with reset to defaults and a failing battery message.
How about you idiots stop telling him to just clear the password, he clearly said that his dad would notice.

Also OP. Next time you have acces to your pc again, set a bios password so he cant do this again.

He would then just take the pc :/ He is very strict and very ocd (Fucking hoovering!!)

My question was WOULD A HARDWARE KEYLOGER LOG IT?
Most likely.
Yeah, it should log it.
Is the bios from toshiba? If so, you can just insert a keydisk which bypasses (bypass, not clear) all cmos and bios passwords.
I think its an AMI. And i have learned that the correct term for the password is a "Power-on" Password
Ok I know Killerbanjo, Believe me when I say that anything that would effect the PC in any way would get him fucked over enormously. His dad is a colossal asshole when it comes to this sort of thing. In a YOU MUST HAVE DONE IT sort of way.
too true Mindless... too true :(
Yeah, it should log it.
I would rather have YES or NO as £35-45 is alot of money for me :/
Theres no reason it wont log it. The signal from the keyboard to the PC is the same no matter what the stage of the boot is.
I understand that but we all know computers are funny things. :/
if it won't work it's still a cool thing to have
An expensive cool thing. If i wanted to keylog normally i would just use a software one. I have a few of them but maybe i should just invest in one
Just tell your dad to screw off and to tell you the password.
It will work.
