so I got a message from my ISP saying they upgrade my internet speed but I might need a new modem

The internet service I have is called "Cox Premier" which used to be 30Mbps but it is now 50Mbps, but speedtest only reports ~30Mbps, so does the official ISP speed testing thing on their site.
Now of course the ISP site telling me I "might" need a modem upgrade to utilize the new speeds doesn't list any technical info, heck the modem they are trying to make you buy isn't even named, just that it has WiFi and that it will be awesome for tablets and streaming.
This is my current modem:
Motorola Surfboard SB5101 (from the modem itself) but the ISP site says I have Scientific Atlanta DGI5101, probably the same thing.
Does it sound like I really do need a modem upgrade? And if so, what should I get? If it matters, my router is D-Link DIR-655
they'll probably be switching up to DOCSIS3 (call and confirm with them though)
look for any modem that supports DOCSIS3
yeah comcast upgraded our internet speeds and we had to send in our old docsis2 modem and they gave us a docsis3 modem
fyi this is the one i'm using http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-DOCSIS-Cable-Modem-DPC3008-CC/dp/B006IJHK96
As what the other said, if your internet is delivered via cable or fibre then you likely need a DOCSIS 3 modem.

Fiber? That doesn't sound correct. I think you're thinking about Coax.
Also, no way he can install fiber himself, you need to use all kinds of tools to clean it.
Your ISP is right, modem upgrades are very common among "global" internet speed upgrades, because older modems cannot fully support newer DOCSIS protocals and isn't capable of providing the higher speed.
