I took my time on the Rex quest in New Vegas because I didn't want him to lose his essential status.
It might be just Todd saying "Dogmeat will not die"
Because he's been in previous titles and they're not killing him off.
Even if he can't be killed I bet it's just an "Essential" check box in the GECK/Construction Kit like previous games, so it won't be hard to mod off.

Unless he needs to be alive for parts of the main quest, which wouldn't surprise me.

remember when people modded children to be killable in Skyrim, but it ended up classing them as a playable race
I can't wait for accidental dogmeat people stretching around like idiots during scripted animations
Call me a loser but I always reloaded if my companion died, even on hardcore in New Vegas.

loser
you asked for it. literally.
Fallout 4 is definitely going to be on hardcore mode by default for me. Im betting hardcore mode will have character needs like food and drink too.
I hope hardcore mode is actually in the game.
I never have any companions in any game because I hate having NPCs follow me around. I hope Dogmeat is optional in FO4 too.
I hate having NPCs following me, I'll just give him the "sit" command in some warehouse and never look back.
Dogmeat is a german shepherd, and he reminds me a fuckload of my first dog, who was a german shepherd. My dog was a tough, smart fucker, just like this fucker right here.
Long live Dogmeat, you fantastic video game woof.
I hope companions are subject to ammo consumption and armor degradation, making them less of a free gun and more of something you need to upkeep. Playing NV, Boone always felt OP having a powerful sniper rifle with unlimited ammo.

Like every conversation? This will be beautiful.

Build him a doghouse and have him stay there
don't need to be rude and lock him in a warehouse :c
Shit, in Fallout 3 you have to wage a full fucking war against her to kill her. This isn't that big of a change for me.

Execute them and take their stuff, what's wrong with you. They have things you can use. It's a dog eat dog world out there, don't gimp yourself because you're trying to hold onto the humanity everyone once had but no longer exists.
Now kill him and take his shit

Damn, even Raiders have dogs man, that's just heartless

Gotta do what you gotta do to survive
Yeah but on the Dogmeat Race subject...
How would races work? From what I saw, it looks like the whole concept of race-selection is gone with the new facegen.
I mean, hell, it seems Races were already being phased out from the Chargen system in Skyrim - Where just out of note, all the non-Beast races could have their face morphed to look like any other non-Beast race (Via the Racemenu mod, mind, but still.) That and the oh so marginal Race differences Skyrim had compared to previous TES games.
So yeah, methinks any custom races are going to require a mod for the Facegen system to open up Race selection.

For me i sent her off to find something, and two minutes later it says she died. Fucking weakling
If they want to integrate dogmeat so heavily into the gameplay, they may as well just have the game end whenever he's killed if currently following the player around; at least immersion won't be broken because 30 people are shooting nukes at him without anything happening.
I kept Dogmeat in Fallout 3 alive without any problems in for over 80 hours...
and then Liberty Prime stepped on him during his killing spree against the Enclave.
I haven't loaded to reverse it.
I'm always a loner in Fallout, so I hope the storyline will not have forced companions.
It won't be a forced companion if only for the fact that the combat montage shows countless instances of the dog not even being around.
It's just a companion, and it's an essential companion, that's it.
I usually never use companions in games that offer them but for some reason the one I actually used was ED-E from fnv.
Dogmeat in Fallout 3 GOTY was pretty much indestructible as well.

And then there was the "Puppies!" Perk that created a new one every time he died.
Is this going to be like Skyrim where every other character is essential?
