• I Need to Set Up A Video Monitoring System

so basically my parents store got robbed, and now my dad isn't taking any chances and is immediately putting up security cameras. He wants me to be in charge of setting up this system (because i would know more about this than anybody in the house). I'm not sure exactly what would be a good system. I told him my web cam can do motion detecting, and upload video feed to a web server via FTP. He seemed interested in this idea, but I told him it's not going to be very good quality unless you invest in a expensive web cam. he said "whatever we need to do to get this done" basically I need a good video security system for my parents store. I figured somebody would know something about them on here..
I don't know about the cameras but for recording and managing the footage something like this is probably what you'll want. http://www.axis.com/products/cam_240q/index.htm

those look nice, but i dont think he wants to pay some company a fee to manage it. hes looking for more of a simple DIY setup. i was reading on that axis site, and got a good idea on how to set the cameras up. now i'm wondering i can some how just use the a computer as a network and server to store the video on? just hook a computer up to a video encoder and then hook up some cameras to that?

This product would be perfect for budget. There's a 4-input one, but its quality is significantly worse. 4 of these would work fine, and it would still be cheaper than a single Dazzle. It works even on Windows 7 x64 edition: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11267 All you need are some cameras that output to composite video, which I'm sure you'll be able to find for very cheap. Here's one that looks quite good: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26537 All you'd need is a 12 volt a power supply for each one, and a dedicated PC with a cheap 1TB drive, and you're good to go. You'll also probably need some long RCA cables. Oh, and you won't want to record sound, since it's illegal to do so in the US. You can use a VNC client like TeamViewer to remotely view the video feeds, too. Keep in mind, this is all just a recommendation - I have no personal experience with stuff like this, but this looks like by far the cheapest way of doing things. I hope this is something you can get started with, and not needlessly have to spend hundreds of extra dollars on equipment that can do the same job as this stuff.
I'd get an Axis network camera. AFAIK you can set them up to upload to FTP, having a computer do it isn't always the best idea since there are more points of failure. I ran a webcam pointing out my house's front window and I gave up since the software kept having problems... http://www.axis.com/products/video/camera/fixed/index.htm
