So my friend has an old Dell Prebuilt and wants to upgrade his shit case
Are dell motherboards...normal?
Like will they fit any case [now really size but screws and stuff] or are they specially designed for Dall cases?
No they won't they're in BTX form factor which is an absolute DICK to work with and won't fit in any normal cases.
They're not normal.
They're just special.
That's the correct term to use.
Many years ago, Dell used power supplies tht looked like they were ATX but were wired differently.
In short, Dell is a bunch of dicks. Tell him to save up and build a completely new machine.
By old I don't mean like dimensions old, its a vostro 420, heres the link to its motherboard

That looks like ATX but I don't know if the screw holes would line up...

A lot of them are m-ATX now.
I have a Dell Studio 540, it's a micro-ATX ASUS motherboard lacking IDE and some SATA ports and it's rebranded Dell. I also switched the case from my friend's Acer M5700, the motherboard is micro-ATX too.
Get a Gigabyte motherboard for around $130 on newegg. You won't regret it.

What do you use to connect hard drives to it, as it has no IDE or SATA ports? USB?

You never saw anything, ever :ninja:

I assume he means there aren't as many IDE and SATA connections as there are on the non-Dell branded board. It's usually done as a cost saving measure. On a scale as large as Dell's, saving a dime per motherboard by removing some connectors and headers will allow them to keep their profits up.

perhaps no extra ports?
Well the motherboard fit fine, but Dell does some weird crap with the heatsink, its like built into the case :what:

Just another reason for them to have you buy ANOTHER computer of theirs. Its all marketing - they want you to pay full price for another PC instead of adding what you ACTUALLY WANT.
