my girlfriend followed this girl who tried to kill herself 3 or 4 times and is in the hospital right now

Basic fucking shit! One should not underestimate the crazy of the public Internet population. Also sad.
My girlfriend is friends with some of these Tumblr self-harmers so I've stumbled into their blogs on occasion. It's fucking terrible. They fall into this mindset where they think it's okay to do this and that it's some kind of unique and acceptable lifestyle. And it's all because other people on Tumblr tell them that it's okay. "Toxic environment" is a very apt description for a lot of these Tumblr communities.
That extends way beyond the self-harming thing, too. Because no matter how fucked up your worldview, lifestyle, beliefs, fetishes, etc., there will always be a group out there on Tumblr who will tell you that it's perfectly normal and encourage you to keep doing whatever it is you're doing.
