Okay, I'll make this quick. I have a Compaq Presario computer from 2004ish, and it's really starting to fall behind with all the current games that there are. I already upgraded from the integrated graphics to my 8800 (Which at the time was the most amazing thing EVER), but now I think it's time to upgrade my CPU. Currently I have an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+. What can I upgrade to, that's at or under $100? Thanks.
don't waste your money on a socket 939 processor, just get a new computer
Why not? I'm pretty sure that this one is fine (although a bit old)
939 is a dead socket, anything you find that's worth buying will be well over $100
Well...then is there anything relatively cheap I can do that I'll be able to preserve most of my parts? I'm fine with my graphics/ RAM/sound card/PSU/everything else, I just need a new CPU. Or atleast I think so.
Post your current specs (in detail, I need to know everything from what kind of RAM you have to how powerful your PSU is, and whether you have PCIe or AGP).
Is there a program I can easily do that with?
nothing really comprehensive, but CPUZ will tell me nearly everything I need to know.
If you don't know your PSU's wattage, you'll have to open up the case. If it can support an 8800GT, it's likely fairly decent.

also what psu do you have?
You can reuse the gpu and hard drive and optical drive.
Its cheaper to buy new mb, cpu, psu, gpu and ram :)
Get a Intel Pentium Dual core ... They r cheap and good

I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ , 4GB ram and a (old) Gforce 8500GT
I can play games like gta 4 ... bf:bc2 on middle detail without problems ..
When i build this pc i paid about 300 Euros :)
