My system is fine and is running smoothly, but one thing isn't: my connection.
I'm in Hawaii, an island seperated from the US Mainland and around the world. Logic says the connection is obviously bad up here. My chances of going into an online server without an admin kicking me for my ping is small as the L4D2 boycotters getting logic.
So, I heard about this Killer NIC card. It supposedly lowers your ping and smooths the online gameplay. Is it true? Newegg reviews says both and good about the card. It's pricy, but it's only half of my weekly paycheck.
So, this fancy Killer NIC card: Worth it or not?
'tis pointless.
Doesn't really have a huge effect on good computers with a broadband connection.
ZOMG HOYL FCUK HRDWRE ACCELERATD VOICE CHAT OMGOMGOMGOMG SOOO COOOL.
not. definitely not. talk to your isp if you want more bandwidth, don't fall for gimmicky shit like this.
the only time this might be worth half the price is if your mobo only supported up to 10/100, which it probably doesn't. almost everything these days will allow at least a gigabit.
It's a fucking joke.
If you fall for shit like this, you need to learn more about networking. :v:
You'd be better off buying one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AKDL1-Dedicated-Link-Cable/dp/B000I1X6PM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
No, wait, this guy burnt it in for you: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000I1X6PM/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used
Seriously. The Killer NIC is pretty much useless.

$500 what the fuck.
There are networking cards you can get which have dedicated Linux PCs on the card :v:, get one of those if you can afford/find one.

I was going to make one like this:
I must warn you, do NOT use these cables. they actually sped up my connection speed so fast that my computer acquired sentience. It now controls several nuclear missile silos.
what have I done...
but then i found out you have to register.
Look at what people buy after viewing that item:
When I saw this image, I knew it would put my neighbor's patriotic lawn display of painting the rusted car on his front lawn red white and blue, and draping his trailer with American flags stolen from the memorial cemetery, to total shame. I'm going to wear it while sitting in front of my home in an inflatable kid's pool while knocking back the cold ones all summer just to rub it in his face!
doesn't take experience, just a little knowledge about networking.
I stand corrected. You're right.

I guess that you already have the fastest possible for your house, if not then get a faster connection/better ISP.
Otherwise satellite connection is out of question, since it will give you around 900ms, I guess that it would be: A) move to another place (closer to the hub) where you can get a faster connection, or B) Move away from Hawaii. There isn't really much you can do about it, unless you are a billionaire, in which case you could have a fiber cable brought to your house on your expenses.
If you already have the best you can have there isn't much you can do except for moving to another house, which seems a bit extreme to me (and if you moved for internet speed reasons, then you'd have to move out of Hawaii which would cost you a lot).
Find out what your upload and download cap is, and if it sucks get a better connection. DSL and Cable companies offer different levels of service.

I have Roadrunner. What internet service do you suggest?
I have Roadrunner. What internet service do you suggest?
No idea, I don't live in Hawaii, but I guess you could start by calling your current ISP and asking if you already have the maximum speed possible for your area, then call other known providers and ask them which speed they can deliver to you. Once you've done that go with the provider that gives you the highest (or the highest you are willing to pay for, since it could be pretty expensive). Also be sure that the one you choose is good too.
