Whenever I log on to my file most of my icons are gone

Well, I got this computer and it always seems to have a problem, Whenever I put it on sleep mode it wont wake up, but if you leave it for about 5 minutes it goes to the user log in screen, So I log onto my file to see it say "Preparing Desktop" Then it comes up to my desktop and most of my icons are gone, This has happend before and restarting fixes it most of the time, So I do that and it didn't work, So most of my icons are gone, Any password I had saved is gone, When I tried to connect to ventrilo it prompted me asking if this was my first time running it etc..., So I don't know what to do, I don't want to have to reinstall everything all over again, Does anyone know what the fuck is happening?

Also, I am using Vista.

I had the same problem, Never found out why it was happening though, Did you recently download anything? Maybe you got a virus?
