I've yet to see a tablet with 4 harddrive and 4 ram slots so I kinda doubt it.
maybe if computers stopped getting better. a key component people seem to forget when writing these articles is that the device in question is not the only thing improving with time. i'm sure that there were articles like this (or atleast similar mindset) when the xbox and playstation 2 were released
'Tablets are going to take over PCs' doesn't really have the same impact on me once you take into account that said tablets have grown mouse and keyboards. They effectively become laptops then, especially considering that you can't play 99% of games without a KB+M or a controller.
Claiming 'high end tablets are going to end gaming PCs' really needs to be changed to 'high end tablets are going to become gaming PCs'.
Yes, just like how fast RVs meant the end of houses.
If it's larger than 24" inches, has a stand and I can plug in a mouse and keyboard and is cheaper than a desktop PC (what it then becomes) then we can talk about it.
They could maybe replace laptops if they run x86 Windows (which some tablets already do), support mouse and keyboard, support multiple external monitors, are at least 17'', have dedicated video cards at least half as good as their desktop equivalent, multiple replaceable HDDs/SSDs, upgradable RAM and an integrated keyboard and touchpad.
Desktops? Never.
I think that will depend on how the push for streaming services will pan out - whether it's gonna be here to stay and only get better over time as infrastructure improves or be forgotten as a fad.

Yeah, as I just said at that point the tablet isn't so much of a tablet as a desktop PC.

i don't think streaming will ever be forgotten, it just might get put on the backburner until infrastructure improves enough for the general populace

Streaming realtime media over the internet currently is bad, it is even worse on wireless. And that's in areas with high speed internet which is very little compared to gamers worldwide. It will take a long long time before streaming actually starts replacing offline gaming.
A number of companies tried to stuff desktop components into notebook casings, which resulted in oversized computers that might as well have been desktop systems, since they were hot, heavy, and had embarrassingly short battery lives.
this was literally still the case in 2014
Razer announced the Razer Edge in 2013, a Windows 8 tablet designed with PC gaming in mind. It can even run Steam.
It can run steam. amazing. so can the $100 HP Stream 7, and that can perfectly function as a streaming/light gaming device (the thing can run Skyrim at 20 fps, for $100)
ShackClickbait please go
Coming from the site that's been advertising the Nvidia Shield non-stop. lol.
Oh lookie, another Wong clickbait "editorial".

Come on you're not even being remotely fair, the edge has an i7, 8GB of ddr3 ram, and a 640M GT. Yes saying "it can even run steam" is a grandparent tier level of poor understanding of technology but the hp stream 7 is garbage in performance compared to the edge, which can actually run a fair bit of stuff the way people will want to, with integrated (removable) controller handles so you don't have to prop it up on your knees and plug in a wired controller
whatever the problems with the edge (price, weight at least I assume) it does at least fill a niche market
People who value easy access and portability over power use tablets.
People who watch Netflix and Youtube in bed use tablets.
Do they even know what a tablet is?
Even if this was true, I have a desk and I have enough knowledge to buy, install and play a PC game. So sure I value power of easy access and portability. Why does everything have to be small? I enjoy the fact that I have a large screen, plus my PC case is large enough to fit in a large graphics card which is powerful enough to run high end games. Why has everything got to be polar too? Can't we have mobile platforms and powerful platforms coexisting? It's like saying Hatchbacks will lead to the death of SUVs. People buy what suits them, turns out my large desk and stationary nature allows me to have a large PC, but I can still see the appeal in getting a laptop or something. Also turns out some people drive through small, crowded roads in cities and others live in rural/suburban areas and have dogs.

You can have a large monitor plugged into a small device when you want to watch something on a big screen. I think the bigger point is people are worried that the fact that most people just use their computers for simple stuff it'll slow down the market for real computers brutally. Making high performance parts is an expensive industry and if it lost a tonne of its customers it could really hurt it
lol maybe laptops

Steven Wong? More like Steven Wrong.
I'm low on jokes today.
If anything, gaming consoles will be the first to go. PC will always have the performance edge over everything else, and PCs will always have the independent/modder edge.
If portable tablets and such are going to devour the gaming market, consoles will be the first to go under.
And even then I doubt it will be anytime soon.

As long as building powerfull pcs keeps getting cheaper and easier, and PC starts invading the living room, this is possible.
i doubt it.
From My perspective i cant see how any serious gamer would want to use the tiny ass screen of a tablet.
I use a 27" monitor and a 50" screen.
Why in the fuck would i give that up for a 14" tablet?
This is a dumb article and a terribly misinformed opinion. Possibly even a marketing ploy for nvidia.

Again, you can plug a smaller device into a larger screen if you really want to view something at high res, there's much better arguments against this

"You can plug it into a bigger display" is a shitty fucking excuse. Why would I plug a shit tablet into a TV when I could plug a PC into it and get vastly superior results?
This is exactly the same bullshit tablet companies were spouting 5 years ago. Tablets will never replace PCs because they fill a different niche. It's like saying handheld consoles will kill home consoles, it just wont happen.
Opinion: Nothing ShackNews posts that starts with "Opinion:" is ever remotely intelligent.

If you're going to buy a mobile device to plug it into a large monitor and M+KB on a desk why bother buying a mobile device? Especially when the 'mobility' will come at a price in comparison to actual PCs.

For real are you serious? Obviously the advantage is that you don't need to buy a computer? I mean don't get me wrong I fall so far outside this group that it seems bizarre to me but some people just only use their computers for facebook and youtube. Telling them they should get a desktop just to plug it into a larger screen is the bullshit, quite frankly
