I live in Florida now and I can't put up with this state anymore, the competition for minimum wage jobs or even below minimum wage jobs have me feeling like the more I work, the less money I make, like I'm in some sort of sick trap. I've managed to find a job in New York that pays over 3 times as much as I make here, but I understand the cost of living is much higher. Which is why right now my plan is to live in my car as I get a better understanding of the area.
I would appreciate it if any Facepuncher's who live in the area would share some basic knowledge that I might over think due to only living in South Florida for so long.
I have a few other specific question too, the kind I can't just google:
Do you think walmart will care if I just park and sleep in their parking lot? (They don't here)
Am I going to get shot? (Super worried about this one)
In my experience restaurant work is really safe, you can get hired same day, and get payed decent; is it like this in New York? Is there a better alternative to this?
General tips and tricks?
I'll add more questions as I think of them, and I want to thank you all preemptively for your help.
Utilize public transportation/walking. It'll be a lot cheaper than taking your car everywhere.
Don't move to New York.
Utilize public transportation/walking. It'll be a lot cheaper than taking your car everywhere.
This is something I've been struggling with, I need my car because for now at least, it is my home. At the same time I also understand that walking and the metro would be a much cheaper option than driving, on top of that if what I heard about New York traffic is true then walking would be faster anyway.
I thought maybe I could park my car in a safe place like a walmart or mcdonalds that happens to be walking distance to a bus or train stop and use public transport from there.
It sounds like a good idea to me, but I want to run it by you guys just in case.
I doubt Walmart will care about sleeping in their parking lot, just don't do it every single night at the same location. My relatives are big fishermen and if they travel across the states they usually use Walmart parking lots to stay overnight and they've never had any issues.
Don't move to New York.
Well on paper New York would be better than here, right now I'm looking at living in my car here because the pay is so low, and the hours so shitty that I can't afford a real home and MAYBE if I'm LUCKY my hours will stay high enough to afford my car.
In New York I can get payed 13-15 (they haven't told me the exact number yet, probably won't know for another month) and get 40 hours, which is more than enough for my car and food.
Be homeless and risk my car? or be homeless and have a car for sure?
Trust me I hate crowds, I'm not going to New York for the dream life.
car inspections are a lot stricter in ny than fl, so make sure your car isn't a piece of shit
also you can't honk your horn or make right turns on reds
people jaywalk all the time, try not to run over anybody
harlem isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, lotsa restaurants with good food for relatively cheap
stay away from tourist traps like times square and rockefeller plaza, they're not that interesting and they're extremely crowded
[editline]3rd December 2014[/editline]
if you can't afford a home in fl you can't afford an apartment in nyc, consider looking at places in westchester like yonkers and peekskill. you can take the train to nyc from there
What part of New York? The whole state isn't NYC
I don't know for sure, there are apparently 4 locations that I could work at. My understanding however is that most likely I will be working somewhere in NYC, I'm going to get the addresses right now I'll be right back.
Edit:
Sorry I've never considered moving to New York before, and have had no interest in the city before now so I have to write down everything because I've never even heard of these places.
The places I'll most likely work will be in "Midtown West" and "SoHo"

unless youre staying around in a rly bad area i wouldnt plan on being shot
traffic also is not really all that bad, though i guess im so used to it i know which streets to take and how to avoid any actual traffic. walking and the subway are just as fine. you can also just park on streets themselves, though usually youre hard pressed to find a spot anyway and there are certain limitations that i cant think of off the top of my head
also no real idea if youre even worried about this but manhattan used to have TERRIBLE noise problems with all the fucking honking, its really died down though with the fines against it

No turn on red? Weird.
I'm glad because Harlem sounded pretty scary to me.
How much would you pay for a studio in Westchester? I know this is a question I could google but having insider info I think is invaluable. If you ever move to Florida I could find you apartments for 500-600 ish, yet online the only thing you'll find in my area is 800+
Edit:
Almost forgot, what the hell is a car inspection?

When the check to make sure your car is up to legal standards, check lights, breaks, engine ect.
What part of New York? The whole state isn't NYC
seriously, most people don't get this
most of the state is pretty rural

That has never happened to anyone I have ever known in Florida ever.
Do they do this when you renew your license or do they pull you over and make you do this?

yeah Harlem isn't so bad, I went to school full of ghetto black kids and absolutely hated the way they acted and ended up imprinting into my head on how I perceive dark skin people in general, after a few years living in east Harlem it really isn't bad at all once you get use to the smell of weed, plus there's loads of cops around here, well atleast in the residential area so you don't really have to worry about bad things happening.
A little fight broke out infront of my apartment and the response time was like 53 secs.

I get that all the time when I tell people I live in NY. "Oh how do you like the city?!" I wouldn't know because I live almost 3 hours away from NYC.
Apparently from what I've heard, NY's pizza is fucking awful. At least some of it. Pizza is supposed to be a finger food and yet if you try eating one there, it's so damned greasy you have to eat it with a fork :v:

Also you should sell the car and try to get an apartment in the city, with how congested it can get your better off using public transportation
Don't go to times square. For any reason.
It's basically crowded all the time and it's more of a tourist attraction with the bright signs and everything.
But that's pretty much there is to offer unless you have tons of cash to blow at the expensive stores around the area.
I have to attend my high school literally 3 blocks away from times square and that place is always crowded and full of assholes.
I live in a suburb county of the NYC metropolitan area. It gets extremely congested and you're better off taking a train to NYC from counties such as Orange, Peekskill, etc. But if you don't wanna do that be prepared to pay well over $200 a month to put your car in a parking garage.

Not sure about NY's inspection, but in VA it's a yearly inspection that ensures your vehicle is safe to be on the road. Like your brakes work, your lights work, your battery isn't jury rigged together from a coat hangar and triple A's. You need to pass inspection to get a sticker in your window and I'm not sure what happens if you don't have an up to date inspection, but it's definitely fines and possibly losing your license if you drive without passing inspection. So hopefully your car is up to snuff, because if it doesn't pass inspection, and you need to plop down $500 or more to do so, that sounds like a big, unexpected expense for you.
You're going to be using a lot of public transportation, so get used to it. Also, you better walk fast, because NYC is packed with millions of people going about their daily grind and you're gonna have to get used to that too. Do not get an attitude with anyone because you're not used to the NY attitude. Why? Because that "attitude" comes naturally from having to deal with tons of people crammed in a bus or on a train car, having barely any room to breathe, and then having to deal with the rush of people either pouring out of the bus/train, or piling into it. Get to know some people, because there are tons of interesting people in this city. Find a cheap place to stay, or get roommates, either way, be as frugal as possible until you get yourself officially situated when it comes to finances.

Whoever told you that probably went to some shitty, no-nothing pizzeria run by zombies. NY pizza for the most part ranges from average to great, you just have to pay attention to who's making it. Also, the greasy pizza is usually just regular cheese slices or pepperoni. If you want to avoid grease altogether, just get a napkin and dab it up. Throw napkin away, eat pizza, enjoy actual pizza flavor, versus oily grease staining your teeth.
I almost forgot to mention, do not buy a car. Don't even think of buying a car unless you know for sure that you will be living here for a long time, or you know that you will definitely need it more than a bus or train.

I'll sell the car when I make sure this is going to work, I understand what you are saying about public transport though.
It's just that my car payment and insurance is less than 500, I don't think I can find an apartment for that, and I might need the car to dip if things go south.
I just like to play it safe, even if that means being homeless for a while.

Yea but you also have to find a place to park your car, and overtime parking prices added up can get expensive. I get that you want it to feel "safe" but your going to be in a lot of trouble if your car got jacked
