Its already very good, so hopefully this is a solid update
Wait a minute. I also saw that GDC presentation and I was under the impression that they were happy with it on the hardware end and weren't intending to change it.
whoever thought to put the gloss on the handles should have been fired.

Executed by firing squad, yes
[editline]8th April 2016[/editline]
not as bad as the pro u and wii gamepad
which is composed only of gloss
Speaking of new features, can Vive track this controller ?
If I were to change the hardware of the SC, I would remove the gloss, add in real rumble motors for better backwards compatibility in addition to the haptic feedback in the touchpads, add in a holder for the dongle in the battery hatch like they did with the CAD files, add in three or four small buttons up top of this highlighted section for use with media buttons or maybe lesser used functions like quicksave and quickload, and maybe minor ergonomic changes.

Other than that, my major gripes and wants with this thing are entirely fixable in software.

I wonder if previous owners will get a discount. I probably wouldn't buy a new Steam Controller for full price depending on how dramatic the changes were if mine still works, but I'd might consider it if I got a discount on it.

That's actually a very good idea. I'm very happy with my steam controller, don't use my old 360 controller anymore at all, so I'm interested in seeing just how they are going to make it better. Might get the new one so I can do some couch coop gaming or something.
Saying that, the new controller apparently won't bring any new functionality and will be focused on visuals and ergonomics.
Kinda sounds related to this when Valve released the 3D geometry of the external bits so people can 3D print and sell their own controller bits and pieces. Valve's example being a little extra pocket for carrying the USB dongle.

So it's probably gonna be small adjustments like these. They do mention in the article that they're satisfied with the actual feature set of the controller.
So this is why they were selling them like hotcakes with Dark Souls 3.
Literally just bought a 1st gen.
Needs much softer and deeper shoulder buttons. Feels like they've melted into the frame.

I feel like they could slant forward a bit, they're a little awkward to press because you can't just slide like with a 360 or PS3 controller (haven't used current gen ones so I can't compare)
Hopefully its got some thumb pad joysticks. I can't even manage playing Telltale's Walking Dead with this controller.

I feel like if it was modular it would have been significantly better.

How long have you actually spent using it? I got up to speed fairly quickly. No doubt the controller isn't great for everyone but I personally don't even use the analog stick. I play Dragon's Dogma, a fast third person action game, with the two touchpads for movement and using the camera, which includes aiming a bow and shooting moving targets. Works like a charm. Something I couldn't do nearly as well with a 360 controller.
Well I'm glad I didn't buy right away then. Of all the "steam stuff" coming out the controller was the only that that really caught my eye.

I think a row of 5 or 6 buttons on the top would be boss as shit
you could easily place 6 modes on the top, or even just 3 action modes and then maybe the other 3 buttons for media controls

YES
dedicated programmable buttons would be the shit, it'd solve so many problems regarding what to map meta-buttons (like mode switches) to
I'm a bit salty I ordered one with Dark Souls 3
Just a little bit
Dark souls with a steam controller? what? why?
it doesn't only work as a keyboard emulator you know
the SC with souls is honestly better than a regular controller
[editline]9th April 2016[/editline]
I even started ds2 again with one thinking it'll be the one game that isn't better with it
Dark souls with a steam controller? what? why?
http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/276/
There's a bundle for it. As to why, I had a bit of disposable income and curiosity tempted me, esp when J!NX was praising its usage with dark souls so much.
Better camera controls I guess? And an extra button on the back for sprinting. That's kinda it right?
grip button to change spells and dodge, dual stage triggers for heavy/light attacks, bumpers to change weapons without needing to stop movement
I also have y set to change item slot, and powerstance set to joystick click.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/aerYFDV.png[/t]
It needs practice but I found it to be a far better way of doing it than normal gamepads. Keeps you on your feet a lot easier.
You don't need to stop movement to change weapons or spells on an xbox controller unless you have freakishly small hands. I just use my right thumb to reach for the dpad.
I used to do that too, and I use an MMO mouse so it's not like my hands are burgerkingcommercial size
but doing that is pretty obnoxious as shit. you also can't roll when doing that, and when you use spells you HAVE to change shit up constantly for PVP or else you're dead, so doing it that way just doesn't work in practice.
Most of my time spent was with both xbox controllers and a wii u pro controller. It took a lot of adjusting to even bother with a steampad but it did pay off.
on that note I don't like their camera joystick emulation. But that's because I always use the gyro/trackpad
On Dishonored I set the gyro to dodge, it was pretty fun
Also, putting the attacks on the same trigger seems incredibly awkward. But I guess it works out because you're recommending it.
broke my merge

I haven't used your controller setup because I don't own a steam so I can't really be sure. But most of the benefits from item switching seem contrived, I have never had any issues with switching items in pvp. Maybe I have to try the steam controller to become enlightened?
ultimately a matter of preference as to where shit should be
the bumpers are a bit oddly placed so heavy attacks set to those are a little, ehh.
item swaps there just for the sake of being next to use item
Still, you've sparked my interest in the controller, considering ordering the controller bundle.
[editline]9th April 2016[/editline]
15 euro for shipping?
are you kidding me volvo
I'm just gonna wait until gen2s hit Gamestop, then.
I saw one last night and was tempted to buy it but it was $50 and this Rock Candy 360 controller is $25 and I needed something compatible with everything, which 360 controllers usually are.
I've had the problem that the trackpad on the right side doesn't work in games like Mad Max or Portal 2. I also can't find any fix. It completely works in general, did the tests and such, but when it comes to use in games it just doesn't work correctly.
