I was trying to install windows 98 on my Compaq evo n610c
and it was formatting the hard disk or something then it said it couldn't so I thought it didn't format it but now when I turn it on I get this.

Any floppies in the drive? Remove them.
no, there isnt even a floppy drive.
It formatted half the drive and the data on the disk is now unusable.
Insert a windows disk and boot with that to re-do the format and instal windows.
If you have a Linux Live CD you could try to reformat with that.
nope :saddowns:

I cant use the CD I have. do I need a rewritable CD?
Do you have a 2gb or larger usb memory stick? if so you can install a lot of linux distros on it with this i personally prefer ubuntu
okay i am going to use Linux live usb.

So I just put it in and it`ll load like a windows cd?
Go into bios and set "Boot Options" to "Boot from removable device" then plug in your memory stick and restart. Then it should boot into live CD.
Try using this HDD Regenerator program. It's bootable.

If i find a blank 4+ GB DVD-R will that work?
How big is the HDD? I Think Win98 uses FAT32 and that has a low limit on it's maximum drive size.
Less than 50 GB.
Have you tried re installing proper windows?
i dont have "proper" windows
You can also try to acuire a copy of xp/vista/7 and run that.
You only need to borrow it from someone so you can run the diskcheck that is on the cd.
There are plenty of linux distro's that fit on a cd or dvd.
Any cd/dvd r/rw will work.
I fixed it thank-you facepunch.
