Hello hello, this is my first thread and post on facepunch so try to bare with any mistakes I make.
I am soon to inherit £1000 and wish to put most of this towards a mid-high end gaming PC. I hope to be purchasing all parts within 7 days, then upon delivery will log and upload my build process for anyone who is interested :)
Parts I have in mind:
Case: NZXT m59 (already purchased along with extra fans)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173550
I chose this case as it has high cooling capability, looks smart and is very affordable for the features included.
PSU: Huntkey Titan 650w (already purchased)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176436
I may be getting a high end gpu which requires 2 PCI-e power connectors.
Motherboard: Asus M4a785td-V evo
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169532
This is a nice, high rated affordable board with some good features and fits the build I am looking at.
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166518
I have looked into unlocking this CPU, it is apparent that with the correct motherboard chipset and a pinch of luck that you can turn this into a quad core, and further with good cooling you are also able to get a good clock speed out of it.
Heatsink: Corsair H50 hybrid cooler
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/177411
A reliable cooler which would work well with the 550 as I am wishing to unlock and overclock.
RAM/Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2x2gb DDR3 1333MHz
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179278
Unsure on this memory, also looking at G-Skill Ripjaws 1333mhz.
Of course there are other parts such as optical drive, hard drives etc but I think I'm okay with those, not going for any SSD as that's out of budget.
The main issue is which graphics card to get?
I would prefer to spend as little as possible but end with a decent gaming rig at the end. I would also to prefer to go with ATI as I am generally more comfortable with them as I have always used them and it would be nice to match up with AMD.
Nominees (lol) are: HD4890, HD5770, HD5830, HD5850, HD5870
I don't know whether DX11 is a big issue or not so that's why the 4890 is a possibility. I have also heard that the 57xx series aren't brilliant so I only have the 5770 in there as it is the most popular one. As for the 58xx series they seem to be clearly the most popular ATI cards, but the 5850=< tend to be quite expensive.
If anyone has been in the same/similar situation as me with these gfx's then feel free to let me know what you went for, any tips or whatever would be great :)
Couple of other small issues are motherboard and memory. Is there any other alternative boards with extra's/ perform better or just better for the money out there (happy to give or take 15 quid or so). And any strong recommendations for memory similar to what I have shown?
I enjoy gaming, video editing, photoshopping, browsing. Usually people go for a higher end computer for this I presume, but I have been stuck with pieces of rubbish my whole life so anything half decent will be a breath of fresh air for me :). I have all peripherals, ie monitor, speakers, mouse ready for a decent computer so my whole budget is focused on the desktop itself.
Basically, ANY CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM WELCOME!
Thankyou :D
I've heard bad things about the M4A series (motherboard), might wanna check a review about that.
Dude for 800 quid you could easily get an i5/X4 955 build
By the way, information I managed to leave out:
I'm from England
I'm not re-using any parts (I'm using a laptop at the moment)
Monitor's native resolution: 2048x1152
I'm going to be completely honest and say I think your build is crap, and that this is much better:
£700
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-121-PC&utm_source=froogle

Nowhere else that I can see has any 5850s in stock at that price, and there's only 1 left in stock, so you'd better order it quick if you're using my recommendation.
I just saw that you've already purchased the Huntkey PSU - please, for the love of god send that hunk of junk back and get a real PSU.
Dude he's been silly and already bought the shit powersupply and Case
Be wary, your computer might blow up killing everyone in your house
SRSLY
That psu. WTF?
Ferrus: Thanks, I'll look into that build or a similar build. Also, I'm not sure what the returns policy on unused products are with ebuyer so that might just be money down the drain :(. Please recommend a more powerful psu than the antec one as the HD 5850 is recommended to run on a 650w psu minimum.
Derlicious: Please, just go away. The whole point in this thread is constructive criticism. It's all fine and dandy telling me this and that's shit, but you need to tell me what to do instead. I understand the psu is probably a stupid purchase, but what on earth is wrong with the case for a build like this?
Fine sorry.
I recommend you go on a Corsair PSU. They are top quality. As for the 650 i think you could run it on a good OCZ/Corsair 600w psu
As for the NZXT, they are known to be quite cheap quality, they are not the worst they just arent the best. It's fine.
Hope you enjoy your knew pc
Just a quick build, but how about:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/205834
Asus 5850
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173804
1tb Samsung 7200rpm
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179278
4gb 1333mhz Crucial 7-7-7-24
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145450
OEM DVD+RW Drive - Samsung
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135514
Corsair 650Watt (Wont Explode)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204939
Amd Phenom 2 x6 2.8ghz
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172846
Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X Socket AM3 Mobo - I'm not great on mobo's so this may need to be changed.
Also that leaves money for the CPU cooler of your choice, e.g the Corsair H50
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/177411
or
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/147097
that maybe
The case is fine.
I reckon you should probably listen to Neddix if you're willing to spend up to £750 on the build.
5830 is know to run really hot, 5870 is out of budget i'd say, and the 5770 isn't worth buying because it's limited ability means that any game that can run dx11 e.g bc2 will run at a poor fps.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204939
Amd Phenom 2 x6 2.8ghz
for a gaming build? no
for a gaming build? no
I was debating whether higher clock speed beats more cores, it really depends whether any rendering or video editing will be done on this computer, it could easily be swapped out for a:
Phenom II x4 965 3.4ghz
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/186428
or be easily overclocked as he has already stated he intends to do.
Thanks derlicious and neddix, I'll look at getting a corsair psu. Need to go a bit cheaper than that though neddix.
How about:
Getting the video card elsewhere for a lower price
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124228
500gb WD CB
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/180490
G-Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600mhz 4gb cl7
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145450
OEM DVD+RW Drive - Samsung
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135514
Corsair 650Watt
A cheaper processor than that :O (not sure which one though)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172846
Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X Socket AM3
I think that would work, what sort of price for the processor?
I would really get anything other than a quad core, maybe a
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190673
which is the one down from the one I posted before.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204939
Amd Phenom 2 x6 2.8ghz
Personally I'd go for the Phenom 2 x4 955 (or 965) as it beats the hexacore in almost all benchmarks, is cheaper and 6 cores aren't really necessary
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190673
I'd like to keep processor below 100ish but if you think it's worth spending the extra for that x4 then I'm happy to push myself that far
I definitely think it's worth it seeing as it IS the driving force behind your PC, and the results on unlocking cores can be unpredictable since they are often locked because they have unstable cores or damaged cores (or so I hear)
Also did you know that the cooler you put in your OP is part of a water cooling system?
Also did you know that the cooler you put in your OP is part of a water cooling system?
It's not a part, it is a whole watercooling system in one neat little bundle :)

A far better motherboard here: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/219204
(New chipset, potential for crossfire and has USB3 ports)
Ferrus: Thanks, I'll look into that build or a similar build. Also, I'm not sure what the returns policy on unused products are with ebuyer so that might just be money down the drain :(.?
You can return products if they are unopened within a certain period. I advise you to do it.
550W is more than adequate for a 5850 (even ATi say that, and they exaggerate to accommodate crap PSUs). It's 600W+ when you crossfire.

I cannot thank you enough for finding this :buddy:

Wow, this board is great for the price. Thanks a lot :D
Ferrus: Ah alright, I heard from someone that ATI had said that the HD 5850 needed at least a 650w supply, but after checking for myself you are right.
Still havn't got the money so can't start even buying yet :/
i'd reccomend a psu higher than what your build needs, incase of future decisions on crossfire ect.
go for a 650 or 700w if you have the money
Or buy a 500-550W PSU and make the decision now not to buy into Crossfire, but to instead take the more sensible option of using one good card at a time.

True, I recently changed from a 580w psu though, because 580 was being really overloaded by my ghz oc on a dual core. I'm thinking if he's thinking of ocing aswell he'll need more power.
it's up to him though, 550 probably would be sufficiant for what he's doing
(sorry for spelling)
A high quality 500 or 550 would accommodate OCs as well.
